After watching Mommy Dead and Dearest and The Act (and maybe even scrolling through a few related Reddit threads), you probably know a lot about Gypsy Rose Blanchard’s story. And although you might be able to rattle off all the medications Dee Dee was hoarding in their bathroom cabinet, do you know what Gypsy is up to these days?
Gypsy Rose, now 27, is currently serving a 10-year sentence at the Chillicothe Correctional Center in Missouri. Gypsy received the minimum sentence for second-degree murder in 2016 at the age of 24. She’ll be eligible for parole in 2024, just before she turns 33.
It is commonly reported that Gypsy “murdered” her mother, but that’s technically not the case. It was actually her internet boyfriend, Nicholas Godejohn, who carried out the stabbing that ultimately killed Dee Dee. Nicholas pleaded not guilty but was sentenced to life this February. Gypsy was still obviously involved, as she convinced him to do it in the first place. Her sentencing was incredibly complicated, because despite planning her mother’s murder, she was a victim of abuse.
She’s apparently doing really well in prison.
In a 2018 interview, Gypsy’s stepmother, Kristy, said Gypsy was “thriving” in prison. Last month, Kristy gave an update, saying “She’s still doing really well.”
Kristy also added that Gypsy has a job, attends classes, and enjoys photography.
“Despite everything, she still tells me that she’s happier now than with her mom,” Kristy revealed. “If she had a choice to either be in jail or back with her mom, she would rather be in jail.”
She has complicated feelings about her actions and her sentence.
When speaking to Dr. Phil in 2017, Gypsy admitted that she’s not glad that her mother is dead, but she is glad to be out of the situation.
In the same interview, she mentioned that she feels her sentence is a bit too harsh. “I believe firmly that, no matter what, murder is not okay. But at the same time, I don’t believe I deserve as many years as I got,” Gypsy told Dr. Phil, adding “I don’t believe that I’m in the right place to get the help that I need.”
She’s totally healthy.
Despite all the unnecessary medication she took and procedures she had, Gypsy Rose is currently doing fine health-wise.
“There has been no long-term side effects from all the medication her mom had given her. She has a clean bill of health, thank God,” Kristy confirmed. “Now, don’t get me wrong, her eyes, she does have a lazy eye if she doesn’t wear her glasses all the time. That was since she was a little baby. Everything else was all a lie.”
She has not yet seen ‘Mommy Dead and Dearest’ or ‘The Act.’
Gypsy Rose is not able to watch Mommy Dead and Dearest or The Act while in prison. But she does have some thoughts about both works.
Mommy Dead and Dearest director Erin Lee Carr told Refinery 29 that Gypsy is looking forward to watching the documentary as soon as she leaves prison. “Gypsy has basically had the entire film narrated to her,” she said. “She is really excited to see it.”
As for The Act…Gypsy isn’t on board. “I feel it is very unfair and unprofessional that producers and coproducer Michelle Dean used my actual name and story without my consent and the life rights to do so. Therefore, there will be legal action taken against the show’s creators,” Gypsy told Bustle in an email. Uh oh.
