Outlander has been running for five seasons now with the sixth series having wrapped filming in Scotland. Fans had to endure a long wait for season five, but this will also be the case for season six, with the showrunners confirming a 2022 release date. But when does the next season come out?
When does season 6 of Outlander come out?
Season six has been confirmed to be releasing early 2022 following a faster than usual shooting schedule.
The series suffered a number of delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic and season seven won’t begin filming until next year.
While no specific date has been confirmed, Jamie Fraser star Sam Heughan let slip it would air in February.
The Outlander official Twitter account announced filming had wrapped on the latest series on World Outlander Day on June 1.
The post was captioned: “In honor of #WorldOutlanderDay, I’m excited to announce that #Outlander Season 6 has officially wrapped and is coming your way in early 2022 with a 90-minute premiere episode!”
They also confirmed the next season with only be receiving eight episodes, much shorter than the usual 13 episode run.
This has been done in part to allow the show to catch up to its original release schedule and also give fans a shorter wait for Outlander to return.
As Heughan shared the news on his Twitter account, he told one fan: “Hope she enjoys it! Out in Feb 2022!”
While there’s a long wait ahead for new episodes, Outlander confirmed work would soon begin on season seven.
“With the challenges of filming in these unprecedented times, Season 6 will be eight episodes with production on an extended, sixteen-episode Season 7 beginning next year,” Starz shared.
A behind the scenes set video was also released showing the cast sharing their excitement for the next season.
Asked what they are most excited for, Claire Fraser star Caitriona Balfe explained: “It’s a lot of new things. The fisherfolk, the Christie family.
“The Christie family are kind of a blast from Jamie’s past as well.”
Balfe added: “The underlying theme of this season is definitely that there’s more turmoil here.”
Despite the teaser for season six, the details of the plot are being kept under wraps before its premiere in 2022.
Fans of the series are incredibly excited for Outlander to return and have taken to Twitter to express their hopes.
One fan posted on Twitter: “Cait and Sam both deserved Emmys, Golden Globes for last season. The finale was just amazing.”
Another fan added: “I found a good way to endure the drought is to just keep watching what’s available again and again. I’m on the second time through now and the added insight into the characters really helps to bring the story even more to life. Thank you!”
A third fan said: “This is the best series that has ever been made in human history.”
Outlander season six will be available to watch early 2022 on Starz.
