THE PINK HOUSE: AUSTRALIA'S OLDEST BROTHEL

**** four stars

The Pink House: Australia's Oldest Brothel.

The Pink House: Australia’s Oldest Brothel.

9.35pm, SBS

This 2017 Sydney Film Festival winner is a remarkable documentary, in that it follows for several years the relationship between Carmel Galvin, the 70-year-old madam of Kalgoorlie's 100-year-old brothel, and 45-year-old prostitute "BJ". The state of the industry in the old gold mining town is well covered, but it is these women's stories that emerge as the most affecting, particularly that of BJ, who so generously shares with the camera her struggles.

JOANNA LUMLEY: THE QUEST FOR NOAH'S ARK

Series premiere **** four stars

7.30pm, SBS

Prayers answered, the festival of the travelling Joanna Lumley continues with this one-off documentary about the Biblical boat. With her lovely way of mixing reverence for religion with an appreciation of facts, she visits holy sites from Derbyshire to Istanbul, getting opinions from all sides about what may remain of the ark. As always, it's the people she encounters who make the pilgrimage worthwhile.

As Mama Rose sang in Gypsy, sometimes you really do "gotta get a gimmick".
