Now that Game ofThrones is finished, fans are eager to hear what’s coming next. This curiosityis at least partially fueled by the generaldisappointment in the series finale—for a show that was never afraid totake risks or make hard choices, the finale felt extremely lackluster and even,dare we say, boring. Some people started a petitionfor a remake. But most are just wondering when we can expect the first ofmany spinoff shows.
Good news, Game of Thrones fans! The next chapter in the series, which will be a prequel to the story we just experienced, is in the beginning stages of development and has the potential to be as good as if not better than the original.
Here’s everything we know about the GoT prequel, which is being called The Long Night (unofficially).
Don’t expect to see a Jon Snow cameo
Though the fates of our favorite Game of Thrones characters were left a little vague, the prequelwon’t exploretheir future or their pasts. That’s because the prequel setting isthousands of years before the story of what just happened in Westeros—so unlessthey invent time travel, Arya, Sansa, Tyrion, Daenerys, and Jon Snow will be along way from born.
Here’s what the official description says about the setting:“Taking placethousands of years before the events of Game of Thrones, the series chronicles the world’s descent from the goldenAge of Heroes into its darkest hour. From the horrifying secrets of Westeros’shistory to the true origin of the White Walkers, the mysteries of the East tothe Starks of legend, only one thing is for sure: It’s not the story we thinkwe know.”
Showrunners will have creative control
The story that the prequel will follow hasn’t been written yet, whichgives writers an producers full creative control over what happens. As GoT creator George R.R. Martin explainedto People, “Westeros is a verydifferent place. There’s no King’s Landing. There’s no Iron Throne.There are no Targaryens — Valyria has hardly begun to rise yetwith its dragons and the great empire that it built. We’re dealing with adifferent and older world and hopefully that will be part of the fun of theseries.”
Martin will likely be consulted for his opinion on the storyline andcharacter development. But there’s no chance of fans become irate when the storylinetakes a different turn from the books since there are no books to consult.
Who will star in it?
If you’re mad about how the last season of Game of Thrones turned out, don’t worrytoo much—creators for the prequel are Martin and Jane Goldman (X-Men: First Class, Kingsman: The Secret Service, Kick-Ass), not GoTshowrunners D.B. Weiss and DavidBenioff. A new creative team means a completely unique spin on events andcharacters, which many fans agree could be a welcome change of pace.
Oscar nominee Naomi Watts has agreed to star in the series along withNaomi Ackie (Lady Macbeth), DeniseGough (Made in America), and manyother recognizable names in Hollywood. The cast is notably female-driven.
Filming is set to begin summer of 2019 and the pilot will air on HBO in2020 or 2021, at least one year after the GoTfinale.
