ANGELA Abar confronted the truth about her family history in the latest episode of Watchmen.
The leading lady, played by Regina King, received a blast from the past of epic proportions after overdosing on Nostalgia, a drug created by Adrian Veidt (Jeremy Irons) that contain potent memories.
The pills were outlawed after is was revealed they could trigger psychosis, but clearly Angela deemed ingesting her grandfather’s memories more important than her health as she gulped them all down just before being arrested by Laurie Blake (Jean Smart).
She was stunned to discover that gramps William Reeves was none other than Hooded Justice, one of the first ever costumed heroes.
The vigilante was long believed to be a white man and was a founding member of the legendary Minutemen.
This is touched upon in a clip of American Hero Story, a drama in the Watchmen universe, where Hooded Justice unmasks himself after being blackmailed by the police.
However, the white face is in the interrogation scene is a far cry from the reality Regina comes to grapple with.
Angela warns her that Nostalgia should only be taken by those suffering with dementia and urges her to sign a release from so that they can pump her stomach to ensure she doesn’t suffer any complications.
Next Regina wakes up as her grandfather at the Tulsa police academy graduation ceremony, decades in the past.
The commandant declares: “A uniform a man wears changes him, make sure yours changes you for the better and God bless you for taking an oath to uphold the law and honour the badge.”
However, when it comes to handing out the badges, he skips the young Reeves, with a black officer stepping in to award it instead.
He offers a dark warning to “beware the Cyclops,” words that foreshadow the many acts of betrayal he subsequently encounters.
The episode skips through a series of encounters where Reeves is subjected to racial profiling and bias, which ultimately drive him to operate off the grid as a superhero.
At one point his is beaten in the street by three of his colleagues and a noose is placed around his neck – a symbol that subsequently becomes a part of his costume.
After avenging his mistreatment, we later see Reeves hooking up with fellow superhero Nelson Gardner aka Captain Metropolis – both sexually and professionally.
However, he is urged to cover his face and wear makeup to ensure he doesn’t face prejudice even in the vigilante world.
Later Reeves is horrified to discover that hypnotism technology called mesmerism is being used to brainwash hate groups into murdering African Americans.
He later uses that same technology to get racist officer Judd to hang himself.
Shortly afterwards Angela is brought back to consciousness as awakes hooked up to an IV.
It remains to be seen what she’ll do with her newfound knowledge, but suffice to say it poses just as many questions as it answers.
Watchmen airs Mondays on Sky Atlantic at 9pm.
