Walking Dead season 9 casts Sons of Anarchy star as Whisperers villain from comics

The Walking Dead is losing Rick and Maggie just as its most dangerous enemies ever are gaining in numbers in season nine.

The ninth season will introduce a new enemy faction that make Negan look positively friendly, in the Whisperers – a vicious band of survivors who wear the skin of the dead.

The Whisperers will be led by the enigmatic Alpha, to be played by two-time Academy Award nominee Samantha Morton. Of course, every Alpha needs a Beta, and now Morton has hers.

According to Entertainment Weekly, Ryan Hurst has been cast in the role of the Whisperer’s physically imposing and brutal second-in-command Beta, who comes directly from Robert Kirkman’s original comic book series.

Hurst has experience playing the strong, silent type from his years as Opie Winston in one of Kirkman’s all-time favourite shows, Sons of Anarchy. He’s also starred in Bates Motel and Outsiders.

The Walking Dead has also recently cast another of the Whisperers clan, with Cassady McClincy landing the role of Alpha’s daughter Lydia.

Last week, the show released a set of first-look photos that may offer a preview of what life will be like on the AMC series once Andrew Lincoln and Lauren Cohan depart their long-running lead roles later in the season.

The Walking Dead returns on October 7 on AMC in the US and then the following night (October 8) on FOX and NOW TV in the UK.
