The Canadian actor has taken to Instagram to thank fans and critics of his new series, Heels, arriving later this month on Starz. After starring in five seasons of Vikings as the fierce warrior Bjorn Ironside, Alexander Ludwig has taken his career in an exciting new direction after the historical drama concluded last year on Amazon Prime.
Alexander Ludwig has written a thankful new post on his Instagram page after his new drama Heels received overwhelmingly positive responses from TV critics.
The former Vikings star excels in his new role as Ace Spade, a professional wrestler struggling with a dark past in small town Georgia.
He leads the new series alongside Arrow’s Stephen Amell as Ace’s brother, Jack Spade, whose fights outside the ring are just as ferocious as their bouts inside.
So far, Heels has garnered a strong reception from the likes of Entertainment Weekly, AV Club and Collider.
Upon seeing the first reviews, Ludwig thanked the show’s supporters and encouraged his followers to check out the series premiere next Sunday.
He wrote: “The reviews for @heelsstarz are in and WOW- never have I felt the love more.
“Thank you for the phenomenal response. Can’t wait for everyone to see this.
“It was an absolute rollercoaster but this cast and crew gave it all they had. Thank you truly.”
The star recently opened up about the challenges of the new series in an interview with Express.co.uk.
Thankfully, Ludwig left the shoot for Heels’ first season unscathed, but production hit a roadblock after his co-star Stephen Amell sustained a back injury.
As well as performing plenty of his own wrestling moves, Ludwig channels the trauma and complexity of Ace’s personal life outside the ring in a career-best performance.
Digital Spy’s David Opie even called the star the ‘heavyweight champion’ of the new drama in a review Ludwig admitted made his mother tear up.

He continued: “@digitalspy you made my mom cry, and that one hit me pretty hard too.
“So grateful you all loved the character. It was a complete labour of love. Thank you for your amazing words.”
After remaining a favourite presence on Vikings for so long, fans will be thrilled to see Ludwig take on an even meatier role as the troubled indie wrestler.
His old co-star Gustaf Skarsgård, best known as boatbuilder Floki, even showed his support by commenting some excited emojis on the new Instagram post.
Meanwhile, the show’s official IG account wrote: “Ace Spade is a top contender for MVP.”
Alexander Ludwig is also known for his roles as Cato in The Hunger Games, and appeared in last year’s blockbuster sequel Bad Boys For Life.
The series consists of just eight episodes so far, but strong reviews are an early sign Ace and Jack Spade could return for a second season.
Ludwig is also known for his recent musical projects, having released his first self-titled EP in May of this year.
Heels premieres on Sunday, August 15 on Starz. Vikings seasons 1-6 are available to stream on Amazon Prime Video.
