Season three of Victoria continues on ITV tonight (Sunday, March 31) at 9pm. There are eight episodes in total which will cover the period 1848 to 1851 starting with Queen Victoria (played by Jenna Coleman) and Prince Albert (Tom Hughes) and finishing with the Great Exhibition. Victoria season three also sees the introduction of some new characters in the form of Victoria’s half-sister Princess Feodora of Leiningen (Kate Fleetwood), Prime Minister John Russell (John Sessions), the Duchess of Monmouth (Lily Travers) and Lord Palmerston (Laurence Fox).
Season three opened with audiences meeting Lord Palmerston, who was depicted as something of a ladies’ man and a disregard for the royal family.
He was also seen attending a boxing match and joining an unruly rabble as they cheered on the two fighters.
Palmerston’s behaviour instantly put him in Victoria’s bad books as she held nothing but contempt for the politician, who seemed to be an advocated of republics.
Speaking to media including Express.co.uk, lead star Jenna Coleman explained it was apparent from Queen Victoria’s diaries that she didn’t like the MP.
HOW MANY EPISODES ARE IN VICTORIA SEASON 3?
Coleman said: “She hates Lord Palmerston, like really hates him. She really doesn’t like him.”
She continued: “I think there’s a funny thing with Lord Palmerston, there’s definitely – I think it’s a jealousy in a way – because she’s never really had a threat in terms of… she’s always been a champion of the people and had her audience.
“And somebody else who is very popular amongst the people she can’t quite be, so I think it’s quite an interesting dynamic. Unlike Lord Melbourne and [Sir Robert] Peel to certain aspects, he has his own route.”
Co-star Fox said of the boorish Lothario: “It was so much fun to be rude. I remember being rude to Jenna on the first day, the first scene. She would not move her face.”
WHERE IS VICTORIA SEASON 3 FILMED?
The Lewis actor went on to say: “I do think he does have respect for the institution of the monarchy,” before admitting: “I just work from what Daisy gave me.”
He added: “I think he likes causing trouble. You know people who like prodding other people to see what their reaction is and then they figure out how to behave.”
According to Spartacus Educational, both Victoria and Albert were against Palmerston and in particularly his adventurous sexual behaviour.
He is said on one occasion to have tried to seduce one of the queen’s ladies in waiting. The incident happened when Palmerston went into Lady Dacre’s bedroom while at Windsor Castle.
WHO IS IN THE CAST OF VICTORIA SEASON 3?
Palmerston only managed to remain in office after Lord Melbourne stepped in on his behalf after the incident.
He also had an affair Lord Melbourne’s sister Emily Cowper, whom he married following her husband’s death.
Despite the conflict while he was her foreign secretary, Victoria’s relationship with Palmerston improved when he became her prime minister.
In her diaries she wrote: “We had, God knows! terrible trouble with him about Foreign Affairs.
“Still, as Prime Minister he managed affairs at home well, and behaved to me well. But I never liked him.”
