Former star of The Vampire Diaries Nina Dobrev will show more of her comedic side in a new Netflix movie. The streamer recently announced its lineup of holiday fare, including original films, series, and kid-friendly content. But Dobrev will be seeking a love connection with Never Have I Ever’s Darren Barnet in this rom-com that has her character traveling across the country.
Nina Dobrev stars in ‘Love Hard’ on Netflix
Vampire Diaries ended in 2017, and Dobrev’s been keeping busy with film and television roles. Fans may not be used to seeing her flex her comedy chops, but Netflix sends her on a funny love journey as Natalie Bauer in Love Hard. The trailer dropped online, and fans already have jokes. But most plan to tune it to see Dobrev and Barnet.
According to Netflix’s synopsis of the film, Natalie catches a catfish.
Hopeless romantic but eternally single LA journalist Natalie (Nina Dobrev) thinks things are beginning to look up when she swipes right on a dreamy guy from the East Coast, Tag (Darren Barnet). Taking a leap of faith she jumps on a flight to surprise her crush for the holidays, only to discover that she’s been catfished by Tag’s childhood friend who is equally unlucky in love, Josh (Jimmy O. Yang). This lighthearted romantic comedy chronicles her attempt to reel in love. LOVE HARD also stars James Saito, Harry Shum Jr., Mikaela Hoover and Heather McMahan.
Jimmy O. Yang stars as Josh Lin, the guilty catfisher who has a big crush on Natalie. But when he helps her woo the real object of her affection, will they fall for each other or stay friends? YouTube commenters have ideas, and some predict they’ll wind up together.
“I could be wrong, but I think might fall for the dude who catfished her. I mean, she did fall for a mass murdering vampire, so falling for a dude who catfished her should be tamed compared to that. Lol,” wrote one. Another joked, “That’s elena and Paxton omg !!!”
Love Hard arrives on Netflix on Nov. 5, and it’s not the only comedy Dobrev has in the bag.
Dobrev cast in another comedy
Variety recently reported that Dobrev joined an ensemble cast for an upcoming comedy titled Reunion. Set at a high school reunion, the film is a murder mystery that finds its party guests stuck inside during a snowstorm. It features Chace Crawford, Lil Rel Howery, Billy Magnussen, Dianne Doan, Jamie Chung, Michael Hitchcock, and Jillian Bell.
For those who are unaware, Dobrev has previous experience in the genre. She once played the lead in the sitcom Fam alongside Tone Bell and Sheryl Lee Ralph. And she had a role in the romantic dramedy Departures with Game of Thrones’ Maisie Williams. Perhaps her love for vampires is behind her for the time being.
Fans of The Vampire Diaries can stream the series on Netflix and follow it up with Love Hard on Nov. 5.
