Netflix’s To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before has been getting a lot of love for refreshingly casting an Asian American actress as its romantic lead – yet fans are angry with one of the stars after some problematic tweets were unearthed.
Israel Broussard plays Josh Sanderson in the movie, Lara Jean’s crush and her sister Margot’s ex-boyfriend.
He has been called out by fans when they discovered past tweets – many of which are several years old and have since been deleted – that supported Donald Trump’s travel ban and criticised the Black Lives Matter movement for causing “division”.
Fans also claim to have discovered a since-deleted tweet making a tasteless joke about the 2011 earthquake and tsunami in Tōhoku, Japan just two days after the tragedy, which also contained harmful Asian stereotypes.
One fan complained: “It really sucks that this man got to star in the rare film that had an Asian-American woman as the romantic lead.”
Another tweeted: “Everything I’ve seen is super upsetting… but if he educates himself, apologises and shows that he is changing his views and doesn’t support the bad things, I would like him again.”
Broussard has since apologised for the tweets, saying he is “deeply sorry”.
Posting his apology on Twitter, he continued: “I take full responsibility for my actions and I sincerely apologise. This has been a pivotal life lesson for me.
“I am dedicated to becoming a more informed and educated version of myself.”
To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before stars X Men: Apocalypse’s Lana Condor as a teenager whose unsent love letters to old crushes disastrously find their way to the boys in question. It features three Asian American actresses in leading roles – Janel Parrish and Anna Cathcart play Condor’s sisters.
The film is based on the young adult novel of the same name, written by Jenny Han.
