Following the time-travelling events of Avengers Endgame, the multiverse is well and truly established in the MCU – after being teased in the Ant-Man and Doctor Strange solo outings. And with Natalie Portman’s Jane Foster set to be The Mighty Thor in Taika Waititi’s Thor Love and Thunder, surely this sequel is going to be set in another timeline? Well now a popular new theory argues that the alternate 2012 Loki who escaped in Avengers Endgame will create this very reality.
Reddit user The MediocreCritic argues that in this timeline Jane takes up Thor’s mantle after the Asgardian Prince’s death at the hands of alternate Loki.
Remember this is the Loki who wasn’t redeemed like the one who died at the hands of Thanos in Avengers Infinity War.
He’s still very much a mischievous villain who is expected to mess around with time in the upcoming Loki Disney+ show.
In a Super Bowl clip he was seen wearing a time prison uniform from Marvel comics’ Time Variance Authority.

- Thor Love and Thunder theory: Hela didn’t destroy Mjölnir, Cap took it
The theory argues: “Jane Foster will not be the Jane from the main Avengers’ timeline but from the timeline created by Loki when he escaped in 2012 during the events of the first Avengers.
“In this timeline, our favourite Asgardian, Thor, is dead.
“Jane proves herself worthy and becomes the new Thor in his absence.
“But why an alternate Jane from an alternate timeline? Isn’t that more complicated? Well, I have two reasons for that.”
Firstly: “Mjölnir was destroyed in the main timeline by Hela. In the comics it is the hammer that grants Jane the power of Thor.
“Of course, there are other ways of correcting this, such as reforging the hammer, but if you have an alternate timeline you may as well use it.
Secondly: “This would also avoid a lengthy origin story and give us an already capable Jane, who out of the gate is a seasoned warrior, who has been protecting the realms since alternate Thor’s death.
“In this timeline, Mjölnir would still exist.”

The same theorist also wrote another popular theory on Thor Love and Thunder.
They argued that Hela did not destroy Mjölnir, but Captain America switched the hammer with a fake.
After all, at the end of Avengers Endgame, Cap went back in time to return the Infinity Stones.
But he also had Mjölnir, which Thor had borrowed from the alternate 2013 Asgard he visited with Rocket to get the Reality Stone.
They reckon: “Cap has kept the hammer for decades, until the events of Love and Thunder. Cap preserves the timeline while still keeping the hammer.
“I believe this movie will start with old Cap giving the hammer to Thor or Jane Foster.
“I imagine a scene with old Captain America saying, ‘I think this belongs to you’ as he hands the real Mjölnir back.”
Thor Love and Thunder is released in UK cinemas on February 11, 2022.
