With production on season 3 currently underway, This Is Us’ showrunners Isaac Aptaker and Elizabeth Berger have teased what’s to come in the next line of episodes.
NBC’s family drama is now unrestricted given the events of season 2, meaning This Is Us can follow a new narrative path. No longer will audiences be uncovering the mystery behind Jack Pearson’s death; but does this mean we’ll be witnessing a significant time jump to a period we’ve not seen before?

Whilst taking part in the Television Critics Association’s summer press tour, showrunner Aptaker revealed (via THR) that the new season will “pick up on our Big Three’s birthday” as is tradition for the series, this time as Randall, Kate, and Kevin turn 38.
“We teased a lot of where we’re going at the end of our season last year, when we saw Kevin going on an airplane with Beth’s cousin Zoe to Vietnam,” he said. “We saw Toby in the throes of a depressive episode. Our storylines are going to catch up to all of those moments over the course of this year.”
Fellow showrunner Berger elaborated that fans will also see Kate and Toby “go through various challenges” within the first half of the new season.

“Obviously last season their journey to have a family, that’s a journey that we’re going to be continuing this season, and there’s going to be the stresses of your first year of marriage. It’s something that we’re going to be building toward.”
The duo shared that things feel more “freeing” this time around, seeing as the big question of how Jack died was finally answered in season 2.

“It’s really exciting for us. There’s something very freeing about being past the mystery of Jack’s death and moving into this new chapter and getting to tell a whole completely different kind of story,” Berger said.
“It’s different than anything we [or] any of our writers have done in our first two years. To all of a sudden be immersed in the Vietnam War, we think it’s going to be really special and really different.”

And with a flashback to Vietnam playing a major role in the forthcoming third outing, fans can expect to visit some unfamiliar territory.
Aptaker said: “We’re challenging ourselves to jump to decades we’ve never been in before and go into the future, as we’ve seen a little bit, and really play with the storytelling format in a way that’s just much more complicated than we were able to in earlier seasons when we were showing people how the show worked.”
But while we’ll have to wait until September for all new episodes to see how things turn out, did you hear about the Will & Grace star who’s set to feature in season 3?
This Is Us will be back for its third season on September 25 on NBC. More4 airs the show in the UK.
