This Is Going To Hurt: Secret Diaries of a Junior Doctor is a world-famous memoir by comedy author and former doctor, Adam Kay. The writer has toured the country following the success of his book, and it has now been adapted for the small screen. Express.co.uk has all you need to know about the BBC series and when it will air.
When is This Is Going To Hurt out?
Kay’s memoir has brought tears of joy and devastation to readers since it was first published back in 2017.
His stories are being adapted for the small screen, in the form of a seven-part series for BBC One.
The writer inspired the main character, Adam, a doctor working his way up the ranks of the hospital hierarchy.
The series will make its debut on February 8.
The episodes will last for 45 minutes and should air weekly on BBC One.
Who is in the cast of This Is Going To Hurt?
The lead role, Adam, will be played by Ben Whishaw, a 41-year-old actor known for A Very English Scandal, Skyfall and London Spy.
Ambika Mod will play Shruti, with Harriet Walter as Veronique and Alex Jennings as Mr Lockhart.
Also making an appearance is Michele Austin as Tracy, Kadiff Kirwan as Julian, Ashley McGuire as Miss Houghton, Rory Fleck Byrne as Harry, Tom Durant-Pritchard as Greg and Dywayne Thomas as Liam Henry.
A fan Instagram account for Whishaw has been sharing promotional photos for the series and followers took to the comments to share their thoughts.

Is there a trailer for This Is Going To Hurt?
There is no trailer for the series at the moment, but one is likely to come to light shortly after the release date is announced.
Hopefully, fans of Kay’s work will only have to wait a few more weeks before getting their first peek.
Some promotional photos show Adam (Whishaw) covered in bodily fluids as he carries out a procedure.
In another image, he is seen looking intently at his colleague as they have a discussion in the corridor, both wearing hospital scrubs.

What is This Is Going To Hurt about?
The official synopsis for the series says: “At times hilarious, at times devastating, This is Going to Hurt is a series following Adam, a doctor who we find wending his way through the ranks of hospital hierarchy.
“Junior enough to suffer the crippling hours, but senior enough to face a constant barrage of terrifying responsibilities.
“Adam is clinging to his personal life as he is increasingly overwhelmed by stresses at work: the 97-hour weeks, the life and death decisions, and all the while knowing the hospital parking meter is earning more than him.”
The series is based on Kay’s award-winning memoir of the same name, which has sold more than 2.5 million copies.
The story pulls no punches as it highlights the lows of life on a gynaecology and obstetrics ward.
The series has been described as “blisteringly funny, politically enraging and frequently heart-breaking”.
For many who work in the industry, and even those who do not, this acts as a stark reminder of the vital role played by the NHS.
Particularly amid the Covid pandemic, the series comes as an urgent call to support medics.
This Is Going To Hurt will air on February 8 on BBC One.
