Happy new talk show host Alec Baldwin may not stay that way for long if our cancelation predictions hold up. Yes, his new show is one of five we’ve got earmarked for dismissal during (or after) the 2018-2019 season. Why? You’ll have to read ahead to see. Check out our full list of cancelation predictions below:
1. Sundays with Alec Baldwin (ABC)
Premiere date: TBA Fall 2018, Sundays at 10:00 PM (all times in EST)
Cast: Alec Baldwin, guests
Talk shows outside of the coveted weekday 11:30 PM time slot never stick around long. This one is on Sunday night opposite tons of top shows (especially on HBO and Showtime). Plus, Baldwin’s been here before. He hosted Up Late with Alec Baldwin on MSNBC in 2010 and it was dropped after five episodes and one gay slur. Baldwin is a guy people love to hate. He has his fans, but bad press follows him like a touring rock fan. On top of all that, he’s no Mike Wallace. A preview of Sundays aired after the Oscars earlier this year with guest Jerry Seinfeld and the host failed to wade into the deep end. Expect Baldwin to wax friendly with most his guests and have a few laughs, but he won’t be breaking any news.
2. God Friended Me (CBS)
Premiere date: TBA Fall 2018, Sundays at 8:00 PM
Cast: Brandon Micheal Hall, Joe Morton, Violett Beane, Suraj Sharma
If you aren’t side-eyeing this title, you’re a better person than us. “God Friended Me” sounds more like a South Park episode than a serious CBS drama, but we digress. Silly title aside, the show’s premise just sounds like a miss. It’s about an atheist who gets a friend request from a “God” account on Facebook and immediately starts saving people’s lives. It’s a ludicrous concept made even more ludicrous by cheap production and bad acting. It’s also the type of manipulative show that feeds off people’s beliefs, hoping to capitalize on the popularity of religion. It’s weak and it won’t last. Try sitting through the six-minute trailer, if you dare.
The Cool Kids (Fox)
Premiere date: TBA Fall 2018, Fridays at 8:00 PM
Cast: Vicki Lawrence, David Alan Grier, Leslie Jordan, Martin Mull
First Bad Santa, then Bad Grandpa, then Bad Moms, then Dirty Grandpa, then Bad Grandmas… now this. Set at a retirement community, The Cool Kids is about a group of top dogs having to contend with a sassy newcomer (Lawrence). Isn’t Fox the hip, “young” network? So much for that. Despite the presence of some very funny people here, The Cool Kids is an obvious retread. Old people talking about things old people should not talk about has been done ad nauseam. If you want to hear David Alan Grier and Martin Mull talk about sex, have at it. We’ll be watching something — anything — else.
Whiskey Cavalier (ABC)
Premiere date: Midseason
Cast: Scott Foley, Lauren Cohan, Ana Ortiz, Tyler James Williams, Vir Das
This one is on everyone’s cancelation list thanks to Jimmy Kimmel, who poked fun at its admittedly dumb title back in May when stars Foley and Cohan appeared. Bad title aside, Whiskey Cavalier seems destined to be lost amidst the sea of other shows exactly like it. It’s about two new partners at the FBI and their dynamic as they solve cases. With a premise like that, the show better be amazingly written because this is nothing new. Cohan comes over from The Walking Dead and she’s well-cast as a tough agent and we’ll see if they give her anything good to say. The trailer portends bad things.
Proven Innocent (Fox)
Premiere date: Midseason
Cast: Rachelle Lefevre, Russell Hornsby, Kelsey Grammer, Vincent Kartheiser, Riley Smith, Nikki M. James, Clare O’Connor
Another show we think will simply get lost in the mix is Proven Innocent, the new Fox drama about a firm that deals with overturning wrongful convictions. We can see how this got greenlit, with the popularity of true crime docu-series these days. But those only work because they’re true. Real lives are on the line. Plus, Rectify has already tread this ground from the other side and no one watched that even though it was one of the best shows on TV. Why would anyone tune in to this one?
