The X Factor's Simon Cowell says he's met his match with new judge Louis Tomlinson

Simon Cowell and Louis Tomlinson are clearly a match made in heaven on this year’s The X Factor judging panel.

Uncle Si has revealed that he has a “strong bond” with the former One Direction member, and said that when it comes to judging talent: “I’ve met my match, I’ve got to admit it”.

Speaking to MailOnline, Simon disclosed: “There’s a really strong bond between us, we’ve always been close.

“From the beginning of One Direction, I talked to Louis so much. So when we’ve been auditioning on X Factor in the past, I’m always curious to hear what he likes.”

Simon went on to say that the pair “wind each other up” because Simon’s not a fan of guitar acts. “You want people with strong opinions,” he added.

“He keeps calling me the gaffer, which I think is hysterical. I’m not the gaffer, but he knows me well enough that we just take the mickey out of each other!”

When asked if Louis could be his successor, Simon joked: “I hope he’ll be like me! Maybe he could be my successor… you never know!

“But seriously, I’ve met my match, I’ve got to admit it. All the judges this year have their own opinions, good ideas, it’s been really fun.”

As well as Louis, Robbie Williams and Ayda Field made their X Factor debut over the weekend, and although the new panel divided viewers, there were plenty of memorable moments including an ‘Angels’ singalong, a returning Pop Idol hopeful and an emotional moment for Anthony Russell, who returned after he had to drop out of last year’s competition.

The reality series also had its lowest launch show viewer ratings since it started 14 years ago – but despite that, it was still the most-watched programme on Saturday night (September 1) and a slightly higher percentage of total TV viewers watched year on year.

The X Factor airs on ITV.
