The X Factor cancelled this year as Simon Cowell plans to ‘rest’ ITV series for 12 months

The X Factor is not set to return to our screens this year, with Simon Cowell “resting” the series for the next 12 months.

According to reports, the ITV competition will later return in 2021 amid growing calls for the show to be axed.

The music mogul is said to have plans to “reinvigorate” the show at a later date.

A source told The Sun: “Simon wants to really think through the show and how to reinvigorate it for the future.

“Although The X Factor is contracted for one more series, ITV totally understand the rationale behind the idea of resting it this year and want to give Simon and the team the time to do what they feel is right.”

Last year the show returned with two revamped versions, X Factor: Celebrity and X Factor: The Band.

However, the ratings didn’t soar for either of the shows.

A spokesperson for The X Factor said: “Plans for this autumn are still being finalised and will be announced in due course. We are currently filming Britain’s Got Talent 2020.”

In April 2019, judges Robbie Williams and his wife Ayda Field announced they were quitting the show after just one year on the panel.

Robbie, 45, announced the news on Instagram alongside a photo with his wife, saying: "Sadly though it’s impossible to do everything … and we’re gutted to tell you we won’t be able to return to The X Factor this year.

"We will, however, be working on projects with Simon going forward – and as huge fans of the show, we will still be tuning into The X Factor, voting and winding Simon up…x".

It was later announced that last year’s series would be replaced with the celebrity version of the show.

According to the Daily Star, the show is "done" in its old format, with the possibility of former contestants returning to take part.

A source told the publication: "The decision has been made to drop X Factor in its current form. It has been 100% axed. The show is done. It’s being replaced by a show that’ll only be for celebrities.

"Members of the public won’t get to take part. So viewers won’t see new talent being discovered anymore. It’s the end of an era."
