'The Witcher' Confirms These 2 Characters Will Have A Bigger Role

Netflix’s The Witcher is one of the streaming service’s most anticipated new shows. The show will follow Geralt of Rivia, who is a Witcher, a monster hunter for hire. Geralt travels an area known as The Continent, searching for work.

Throughout his journeys, in The Witcher books, he meets many people, including Yennefer of Vengerberg and Cirilla of Cintra, more commonly known as Ciri. He falls in love with Yennefer and Ciri becomes kind of like a daughter to Geralt and Yennefer. The three of them will make up a somewhat unconventional family in Netflix’s version of The Witcher.

However, Yennefer and Ciri’s roles are somewhat different in the show than they are in the books. Find out how, ahead.

How are Yennefer’s and Ciri’s roles different in Netflix’s ‘The Witcher’?

According to the showrunner of The Witcher, Lauren Hissrich, she “wanted to introduce Ciri and Yennefer earlier” than they are in the books. That definitely makes sense for a TV show, to introduce characters that will become important early on. This way fans will get to know them and care about their fates even more.

Any adaptation will come with its differences from the source material. Some of those differences will work well while others won’t. Only time will tell which is the case for Yennefer and Ciri’s roles yet so far it seems like a good idea to make them more involved from the beginning.

Geralt fans shouldn’t worry, though. Henry Cavill’s version of the character will get enough screentime. As Hissrich says, “He is on the screen a lot. It’s important to make sure that Ciri and Yen get their due.”

Some fans will likely agree, wanting all three characters to be treated well by the adaptation. Geralt is the protagonist yet Yennefer and Ciri are heroes in their own right. Yennefer is a powerful sorceress and Ciri is a princess who is destined to become a Witcher. These three wonderful characters will be exciting to watch in the show, especially given Yennefer and Ciri’s bigger roles.

Why might Yennefer and Ciri have bigger roles in the show?

According to Hissrich, it is because “we need to understand [each character] individually, so we can understand them together.” This is one of the main reasons that Yennefer and Ciri got bigger roles. This way fans can get to know both of the women as individuals before they are part of Geralt’s life.

According to The Witcher fansite Redanian Intelligence, Hissrich was inspired by the author Andrzej Sapkowski. He told her stories about how strong Polish women were during World War II. Sounds good to us!

What might fan reactions be to Yennefer and Ciri’s bigger roles?

Fan reactions so far seem to be mixed. While some fans are most likely excited to see more of Yennefer and Ciri, others say that it’s a “dumb choice.” Still another fan believes the show will be “not worth watching” with more focus on Yennefer and Ciri. Another fan has a message for those fans, though, saying that “the books focused on them a lot too.” Therefore it makes sense for the show to do the same.

The news isn’t all bad for the show, though. One fan seems to be excited to see more of Yennefer and Ciri, saying that they are happy to see the show being made by “a woman who seems to understand her responsibility.” This fan mentions the Game of Thrones writers, who many fans felt did not fully understand what they were getting into.

The Witcher looks like it’s going to be an interesting show, despite what some might think. The books are well-written and therefore the show will hopefully not disappoint. Fans can also look forward to the acting talents of Henry Cavill (Geralt), Anya Chalotra (Yennefer), and Freya Allan (Ciri).
