Details of Andrew Lincoln’s exit from The Walking Dead are understandably under wraps at the moment, though the actor has now hinted that he himself came up with the plot.
The show’s lead will be departing in the upcoming ninth season, and it seems he may have been given creative control over how his exit plays out.
“There was a certain sense of, how do you exit a show that is going to continue?” Lincoln told Entertainment Weekly. “I thought long and hard about it, and I came up with an idea that hopefully is going to work. We’ll see how it goes.”
Lincoln’s fellow star Jeffrey Dean Morgan has suggested that Rick Grimes’ departure will be a “good exit” from the series, though hinted it would pave the way for a new direction.
“I think that it’s a good exit,” Morgan said. “Look, it’s a hard deal, Rick leaving the world of The Walking Dead. So I think his exit… is an okay exit, all things considered. It’s befitting of Rick Grimes.”
He also said that Rick’s exit “has propelled our story in a way that it could never have gone before”.
“I think the fans are going to be super excited to see the direction the show’s going this year,” Morgan added. “It’s a very good year.”
The Walking Dead airs on AMC in the US, and on FOX and NOW TV in the UK. Season 9 premieres on October 7 in the US and October 8 in the UK.
