The Walking Dead episode five saw the characters faced with a number of horrific events to fight their way through. On top of being constantly attacked by walkers, and being secretly sabotaged by the Whisperers, one of the most beloved members of the group could die. Now, after Ezekiel’s (played by Khary Payton) brave revelation he has cancer, showrunner Angela Kang has spoken out about the character’s path.
The Walking Dead’s latest episode saw King Ezekiel drop some shocking news as he showed Siddiq (Avi Nash) a lump on his neck.
When Siddiq asked how long he’s known for, Ezekiel replies “A month, It’s grown since then.”
He went on to give an emotional speech about his family history, and how they fought the condition.
However, he seemed adamant that he wouldn’t be so lucky.

The character added: ”Siddiq, I know what it is. Growing up, my grandfather went through it and my father. The pain, coughing, swelling – I watched them fight it and win.
“Did you know thyroid cancer has a 98 percent survival rate? Different times. Times of sorcery and witchcraft. Chemo, iodine radiation therapy, thyroidectomy. Now – now we both know what it means.”
Fans were devastated the character could be killed off just as romance was blossoming with Michonne (Danai Gurira).
However, showrunner Angela has since spoken out about the dark reasoning he sought comfort in Michonne.
Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, the showrunner said: “Ezekiel is clearly going through a lot right now.
“He’s lost so much and that character is like a Tigger, you know? He’s optimistic and he really takes on a lot of the burden of being the cheerleader for his people.”
“But we’ve also seen that he is able to fall into pretty deep dark depressions as well. When he lost all his people during the All Out War battle on the Savior outpost, we saw that he was in a pretty bad place,” she continued.
“So we really kind of wanted to deal with Ezekiel and where he’s at emotionally and the sense of depression and just thinking for a second then maybe he might want to end it.

The showrunner went on to confirm the kiss was just a romance, and it doesn’t seem to two will reconnect on a romantic level anytime soon.
She added: “For both of them, it’s nice to connect for a second, but then it’s like, no, no, no, no, this is all wrong. We don’t have those feelings for each other.”
This could result in a major loss for Carol Peletier (Melissa McBride) as one of the final scenes saw the character prepare to tell his former love.
