The Mandalorian Schedule Change: When Does Episode 7 Release On Disney Plus?

Episodes 1-6 of The Mandalorian are now available on Disney+. You can binge them all right now in order to catch up for Episode 7, which is the penultimate episode of the Star Wars show’s first season. Unlike almost every episode to date, however, this one won’t arrive on Friday. Instead, you’ve only got two more days to wait, as The Mandalorian Episode releases on Wednesday, December 18.

Why the change? The move was presumably made because Star Wars Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker releases this Friday, December 20 (although technically, the first public showings will come on Thursday evening in the US). Disney is probably rightly expecting Friday’s focus to be on the new movie and conclusion of the Skywalker saga. Viewers of this episode will also be treated to a sneak peek of the upcoming movie. The season finale, Episode 8, resumes the normal schedule and drops on Friday, December 27.

The Mandalorian Season 1 Release Schedule

  • Episode 1: Tuesday, November 12
  • Episode 2: Friday, November 15
  • Episode 3: Friday, November 22
  • Episode 4: Friday, November 29
  • Episode 5: Friday, December 6
  • Episode 6: Friday, December 13
  • Episode 7: Wednesday, December 18
  • Episode 8 (season finale): Friday, December 27

Star Wars fans with fresh subscriptions to Disney’s new streaming service cannot binge the new series all at once, as they might be accustomed to with many other original shows on streaming services. Instead, they’ll have to wait a week between installments over the show’s eight-episode run, digesting and discussing each episode in between drops. Disney has opted for a traditional weekly release structure over the Netflix-popularized “binge” model, whereby an entire season is dropped online at once. However, the wait between Episodes 1 and 2 is shorter than the wait will be for Episode 3 onward, and fans who like to watch fast and avoid spoilers will want to plan accordingly.

The first four episodes of The Mandalorian were all written by Jon Favreau (Iron Man, The Lion King remake), and this second episode is directed by Rick Famuyiwa (Dope). Incidentally, Famuyiwa is the first person of color to direct a live-action installment of Star Wars; the third episode, directed by Deborah Chow (American Gods, Reign) will be the first live-action Star Wars directed by a woman. Other directors across the season include Bryce Dallas Howard, Dave Filoni, and Taika Waititi.
