Why was The Fall cancelled after season 3?

WARNING: This article contains spoilers for the end of The Fall season 3.

When The Fall was first released on BBC Two and RTÉ One back in 2013, viewers were quickly hooked by the serial killer drama.

The show went on to run for three seasons on the channel as viewers followed the cat and mouse game between Stella Gibson (played by Gillian Anderson) and Paul Spector (Jamie Dornan).

However, the third season was revealed as the final outing back when it aired in 2016.

The show has now gained even more fans after being released in full on Netflix, which has led some to wonder why this was.

There was some confusion at the time whether season three was going to be released as the final outing or not.

This is because back in 2015, Anderson had said she thought the show could run for four seasons.

Speaking to the Daily Mail at the time, she said she thought it could go to season four which would air in 2017.

Although by the time filming began on season three, the decision was made to end the show.

This was confirmed in a Deadline report in early 2016, which revealed it would be the final season.

At the time, the BBC’s Kim Shillinglaw said: “[Creator] Allan [Cubitt] has known the end game from the beginning.

“The cat and mouse game between Gillian and Jamie has one last act to play out. Who will win?”

There was never an exact reason given for why the show came to an end, it was simply implied the story had reached its conclusion.

Fans will remember how the finale saw Stella interrogate Spector in order to try and get him to admit to his crimes.

But he never did face justice, killing himself, his psychiatrist and another patient in the dramatic finale.

This brought the story to a satisfying end as it also followed how some of his victims and their families sought closure.

However, there was an implication at the end that Stella could be about to move onto a new case.

This led some to wonder if she would be starring in another season by herself.

But, this was not the case and the show ended after season three.

Since the series finished, its two stars have also gone on to star in many more high-profile projects.

Anderson has gone on the play the role of Jean Milburn in Netflix’s Sex Education and will soon be seen as Margaret Thatcher in The Crown season four.

Dornan was cast as Christian Grey in the Fifty Shade of Grey films and has gone on to appear in Robin Hood and A Private War.

The Fall seasons 1-3 are available to stream on Netflix now.
