The Heathers TV reboot is taking a cue from Veronica Sawyer and coming back from the dead. Last February, Paramount Network indefinitely delayed the small-screen reboot in the aftermath of the fatal Parkland shooting. However, on Thursday, Oct. 25, you can watch the Heathers reboot which will air two episodes at a time for five consecutive nights.
Although the series originally featured a total of 10 episodes, Paramount Network will only air the first nine and end the series with a major cliffhanger. The series was edited for violent and graphic scenes. The finale will now be a culmination of the final two episodes, but the ninth episode will not feature the famous scene from the movie where the high school is blown up. Scenes in Episode 5, which initially featured teachers holding guns, have also been taken out.
For anyone who prefers to binge-watch Heathers, you can stream all nine episodes on Paramount Network’s app and website on Oct. 22.
“I am beyond excited that American audiences will finally get to see Heathers,” showrunner Jason Micallef said in a statement. “Obviously I wish fans could see the 10th episode but the producers and I felt strongly about not changing anything in it, and so, it’s been considered too controversial for U.S. audiences. Still, every day at this job is a delightful dream so it’s hard to complain. Plus, what matters most is fans will now get to see the satire we all love so much.”
The forthcoming TV series is based on the 1988 cult classic film starring Winona Ryder, Shannen Doherty, and Christian Slater. The small-screen reboot will be served up as a anthology series and will feature Selma Blair and Doherty as well. Don’t expect to see the shoulder-padded, “Lick it up, baby. Lick it up,” mentality of the ’80s Heathers, though. The new, terrible trio is more like the outcasts in this rendition. In fact, Heather Duke 2.0 (Brendan Scannell) has been reimagined as the gender-queer Heath, while Heather McNamara (Jasmine Mathews) is African-American.
In fact, Heather Chandler (Melanie Field) has been entirely reshaped as well. The leader of Westerburgh High’s most popular and feared group, the Heathers, is not to be trifled with. The small-screen version of Heather Chandler looks nothing like the original. The revamped rendition is a brunette diva who wears a slicked-back bouffant and hard-to-ignore outfits. The TV Heather Chandler feels more modern and could easily be the baddest bitch in the room. She oozes confidence, body positivity, and aggression, which is vastly more radical than the vibes Kim Walker put out as the all-American girl in the film.
The show’s protagonist, Veronica, will be portrayed by Grace Victoria Cox and James Scully will play her deranged love interest, J.D.
Earlier this year, Paramount Network explained why it had chosen to shelve the TV reboot after the Parkland shooting.
“Heathers is a satirical comedy that takes creative risks in dealing with many of society’s most challenging subjects ranging from personal identity to race and socio-economic status to gun violence,” read a statement from Paramount Network at the time. “While we stand firmly behind the show, in light of the recent tragic events in Florida and out of respect for the victims, their families and loved ones, we feel the right thing to do is delay the premiere until later this year.”
In June, the Paramount Network announced that the TV reboot was scrapped altogether. Now it appears the network had a change of heart and has decided to air Heathers after all.
But the questions remains: Will you tune in to watch this TV reboot or will you give it a hard pass? Let us know in the comments.
