The Big Bang Theory ran for 12 seasons on CBS and it remains to be one of the most popular sitcoms across the world. Fans fell in love with the socially awkward bunch and the main group of friends will forever be recognised for their hilarious roles. Simon Helberg, who plays Howard Wolowitz in the series, has revealed how he almost didn’t get the role.

How did Simon Helberg almost miss out on Howard role?

The Big Bang Theory’s Howard Wolowitz was an aerospace engineer and he was known for his turbulent relationship with his mother, Debbie (Carol Ann Susi).

He did not live with the rest of the group, instead sharing a home with his mother.

Howard went off into space, training as an astronaut, and his other passion in life was his girlfriend Bernadette (Melissa Rauch).

They went on to get married in the series and played a huge part in the show’s final episode.

Actor Helberg spoke to NOW’S podcast, Plot Twist, about how he almost missed out on the role altogether as he was working on another series.

He said: “Big Bang came around and I was like ‘I’m on the show, it’s an amazing group of people and I’m not going to audition.

“I don’t want to lose the thing I have, and I’ve done enough pilots that haven’t gone anywhere and played enough nerdy characters.”

With this in mind, he did not have faith in the initial idea for the show and did not want to risk losing out on his other opportunities.

Before starring in the series, he played Simon in the show Derek and Simon, which aired in 2007.

He was co-creator, writer and producer on the series, and it was a huge project for him.

Around the same time, he had starred in Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip, featuring in 14 episodes.

He added: “I was convinced by my agent to go in for The Big Bang Theory, and it was THE plot twist – total hard stop, left turn.

“The show was the first thing I’d ever been a part of that actually aired!”

Thankfully he made the right decision as the series went on to become a huge hit around the world.

The sitcom has won numerous awards including Best Comedy Series at the Television Critics Association awards in 2009.

In 2010, the show won the People’s Choice Award for Favorite Comedy.

Six years later, it took the International category at the UK’s National Television Awards.

Helberg himself won Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series for his role as Howard at the 2013 Critics’ Choice Awards.

He was nominated for seven other accolades for playing what would become his most successful role.

Fans have taken to Reddit to discuss how Howard is the best character in The Big Bang Theory.

One said: “His character is the most grounded and well rounded. I feel he is never too over the top. He is very much laid back and subtle especially compared to the other characters.”

Another added: “I’ve come to the same conclusion. Howard is HILARIOUS, especially when he calls Sheldon out on his bull***. That one episode over the parking space was awesome.

“Howard is basically the most normal out of all of them, and he’s a great actor to boot.”

The 40-year-old is on Twitter and he has been keeping fans up to date with his latest ventures.

6 He recently took part in a premiere event for the 2021 film Annette, in which he plays The Conductor.

The Big Bang Theory is available to watch on Netflix and HBO Max.
