The Big Bang Theory is ending, as creators confirm the show will finish with season 12

The Big Bang Theory fans, we have some news that most definitely won’t have you joyfully shouting “Bazinga!”.

After all the recent talk about your favourite show’s future, CBS and the sitcom’s producers at Warner Bros TV and Chuck Lorre Productions have now confirmed the universe-shaking news that season 12 will definitely be the last for the series.

Their joint statement reads: “We are forever grateful to our fans for their support of The Big Bang Theory during the past 12 seasons.

“We, along with the cast, writers and crew, are extremely appreciative of the show’s success and aim to deliver a final season, and series finale, that will bring The Big Bang Theory to an epic creative close.”

The stunning announcement comes just two weeks after CBS Entertainment President Kelly Kahl told reporters at the TCA press tour that her network wasn’t looking at season 12 as the end of The Big Bang Theory.

“We are in preliminary discussions to renew the show,” she said on August 5.

One bit of good news though is that the writing team have long prepared for the Emmy-winning sitcom to wrap up. This past spring, writer-producer Steve Holland promised that his team were already well into planning a hugely ambitious season, whether it was the swansong or not.

“We’re not leaving anything on the table in season 12,” he promised TVLine. “If there are stories we want to do, we will put them out there and see what happens.”

The cast are back at work filming those new episodes, which pick up after Sheldon and Amy’s surprisingly painful wedding in this past spring’s finale.

And if you’re really feeling blue about the show’s end, do keep in mind that spin-off Young Sheldon is still very much alive.

The Big Bang Theory kicks off its final season in the US on Monday, September 24 at 8pm ET, and then moves back to its traditional Thursday slot on September 27 at 8pm ET. E4 airs the show in the UK.
