It’s time to suit up and shoot for the stars.
Marvel’s new trailer for Captain Marvel proves that the titular character is the hero we need right now. Brie Larson certainly packs a one-two punch as Carol Danvers and the MCU’s first solo female superhero on the big screen. With this powerful new addition in the mix, it’s clear that we have a very complicated and intriguing story on our hands.
The film follows Danvers, an officer in the United States Air Force, who also happens to wield some serious cosmic powers. If the teaser is a clear indication of what’s to come, we can expect tons of throwbacks and a high-on-thrills saga when it hits theaters in March 2019.
Before we get ahead of ourselves, let’s decode the 5 biggest revelations in the phenomenal Captain Marvel trailer.
1. Captain Marvel takes place in the ’90s.
We first meet Carol Danvers as she’s literally crashing into the action section of a Blockbuster Video store. From the get-go, we know that she is a part-human, part-alien superhero who is returning to Earth after a very long time. It’s clear that Carol doesn’t know what to make of her past which means this is an origins story.
Here’s hoping that Captain Marvel is filled with the best elements of ’90s blockbusters.
2. Carol Danvers is a renegade soldier and Nick Fury isn’t sporting his signature eye patch.
Samuel L. Jackson shines as the digitally de-aged Nick Fury, who also has both eyes intact. Perhaps we’ll finally get to see how Sgt. Fury lost his eye in this film. This isn’t the Nick Fury we are used to seeing, with his grizzly demeanor and razor-sharp comebacks. In fact, he’s just a junior S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent who’s looking for a little career revitalization after serving as a bored desk jockey.
“I know a renegade soldier when I see one,” he blurts out after seeing Carol for the first time. “Never occurred to me that one might come from above.”
It’s an important observation because it implies that Carol is in conflict with the Skrulls and the Kree Starforce. That would explain her return to Earth, especially if she’s attempting to uncover memories that are buried deep within her mind.
3. Carol punches an old lady, but she probably has good reason to.
Fighting an army of shape-shifting aliens can be very tricky, but Carol is a damn professional superhero. If you think she’s just going around punching cute old ladies on the train, then you’re grievously mistaken. It’s more plausible that a Skrull is posing as the human granny.
If you pay closer attention to the trailer, there is a lot going down at the S.H.I.E.L.D. base. One sequence specially shows an autopsy of a shape-shifting Skrull. There’s also a shot of Ben Mendelsohn, who portrays Skrull leader Talos, in human form. Yes, that means he has infiltrated S.H.I.E.L.D. as Nick Fury’s boss!
4. The mystery behind Carol’s amnesia, her evolving superpowers, and her nemesis.
Based off the trailer, Carol believes she’s a Kree soldier, but everything changes when she comes crashing down to Earth. Not only does Carol discover that her memories have been altered, but she attempts to recover the past so she can figure out how she ended up as a cosmic warrior in the Kree Starforce. The flashbacks in the trailer portray Carol’s childhood, her time as a pilot in the Air Force, and the first sign of her superpowers.
In the comics, Carol’s powers come at a physical cost. After being exposed to Kree energy, a third lobe is created in Carol’s brain which enables her to control her superpowers. Eventually, Carol develops brain lesions due to excessive use of her abilities. These lesions are later revealed to have been caused by her nemesis and Kree commander, Yon-Rogg. Now that we’ve caught a glimpse of Jude Law in the trailer, the chances of him playing Yon-Rogg appear to be very high.
5. Captain America passes the baton to Captain Marvel.
The flashback sequence to Carol’s time as a cadet in the U.S. Air Force draws a rich parallel to another MCU film. The training scene in Captain Marvel is deliberately similar to those experienced by Steve Rogers in Captain America: The First Avenger. Carol even wears a cap like the one Steve sports when he means business. All of this serves as a subtle but impactful homage to Rogers, and also hints to how Carol will define the post-Phase 3 MCU. Much like how Captain American shaped the current Avengers, Captain Marvel will leave her own badass mark on the forthcoming Marvel movies. So grab a Kleenex because that means Captain America will most likely perish in the last installment of the Avengers.
