Strictly's Susannah Constantine feared being diagnosed as 'manic depressive' like late mum

The former What Not To Wear host, 56, suffers from panic attacks and anxiety and credits her husband of 23 years, Sten, with helping her cope.

Susannah – who is back on TV after signing up to the new series of the dance show – has opened up about the agony she faced looking after her mum.

She told the Sunday Mirror that she would end up with a form of depression too.

She said: "Mum made numerous suicide attempts and was in and out of psychiatric hospitals.

“It left me with a fear of abandonment and I was vulnerable to panic attacks…

"I was terrified that I had the same gene – my mother and I looked very alike – and that I would develop depression too."

She has faced her own battles with anxiety, but she says her husband of 23 years has been a huge help.

The mum-of-three also credits exercise with keeping her spirits lifted.

Susannah added: "I still have anxiety attacks now and usually it’s something you can’t put your finger on and exercise does help with that enormously…

"Quite often I wake up full of fear and I don’t know why. I have had it all my life…

"My husband Sten was very supportive and reassuring.”
