“Late Show” host catches the president lifting a bonkers argument the comedian made (as a joke) over a decade ago on “The Colbert Report.”
Stephen Colbert wants to sue President Donald Trump for lifting terrible ideas from his old Comedy Central show, "The Colbert Report."
"Trump stole my bit," the "Late Show" host complained during his monologue on Wednesday night and eventually declared, "He is stealing my anti-intellectual property, so tonight I am officially announcing that I am suing Donald J. Trump for stealing my old character."
The issue? Trump rambling to The Washington Post about how his gut is smarter than other people’s brains while talking about is unhappiness with the Federal Reserve. "They’re making a mistake because I have a gut, and my gut tells me more sometimes than anybody else’s brain can ever tell me," Trump said.
Colbert explained, "That quote about trusting your gut over the brains of experts reminded me of somebody I used to know — me."
In his very first "Colbert Report" episode, the comedian made a similar argument in character as a faux conservative pundit.
"That’s where the truth comes from, ladies and gentlemen, the gut," Colbert joked back in 2005. "Did you know you have more nerve endings in your stomach than in your head? Look it up. Now, somebody’s going to say, ‘I did look that up and it’s wrong.’ Well mister, that’s because you looked it up in a book. Next time trying looking it up in your gut."
Colbert argued, "That’s copyright infringement. That is clear copyright infringement."
And then he offered this advice: "You better lawyer up, buddy! And somebody better than Rudy Giuliani, too."
