Star Wars’ Domnhall Gleeson opens up about the “intense” side of fame

Fame can be a bit like the dark side — it’s tempting, but often overwhelms those who indulge in it.

Star Wars actor Domhnall Gleeson knows a lot about both sides of fame, having starred in some of cinema’s biggest recent movies like The Last Jedi and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2.

He’s also found the experience hard to get to grips with and opened up about the “intense” side of fame in a new interview.

“It can feel intense and I’m not necessarily good with that. It’s just not how I was built. But it just depends on the person and how they handle themselves,” Gleeson admitted to Total Film.

“I’ve got to the point now that if I see someone whose work I really dig, I leave them alone because I think, ‘Ah maybe I’ll make their day better by not doing that’.

“Because I’ve worked with people who are truly famous, like Leo [DiCaprio] and Tom [Cruise] and Angelina [Jolie]. They can’t really go anywhere.

“That’s not my issue. I’m doing fine by comparison. My favourite is Margot Robbie, who is incredibly well known and has a very intense fan base, and she said, ‘There’s nothing bad about it, comparatively, to complain about.’ And I think, ‘If Margot’s not complaining…'”

What a very sensible reaction, Domhnall. We knew there was a reason we liked you.

Gleeson stars as General Hux in the new Star Wars movies — evil henchman to first Emperor Snoke and then sith lord Kylo Ren.

Recently, he spoke out about being ‘force choked’ in the franchise and revealed it’s actually a more complicated process than you think.

Speaking to USA Today, Gleeson said he “didn’t know” what Kylo’s use of the Force was supposed to feel like.

Calling the scene in which Kylo Ren channelled his inner-Darth Vader “funny” to shoot, he said: “I don’t know if it’s supposed to be the feeling of an actual hand or whether it’s just compressing on itself, you know what I mean?

“Do you scramble up to where you think the hand would be? Or do you scramble in at the neck itself? And are you trying to relieve it or trying to help?”

To be honest, it probably wouldn’t make much difference what you did, Domhnall. You’d still definitely be dead.
