The soundtrack to Spike Lee’s new movie BlacKkKlansman will feature an unreleased Prince track.
The director has told Rolling Stone he secured the rights to Mary Don’t You Weep, which plays over the film’s end credits.
“I knew that I needed an end-credit song,” Lee explained. “I’ve become very close with Troy Carter, one of the executives at Spotify (and a Prince estate advisor), so I invited Troy to a private screening. And after, he said, ‘Spike, I got the song’. And that was Mary Don’t You Weep, which had been recorded on cassette in the mid-80s”.
And now the filmmaker is convinced Prince wanted him to have the song: “I don’t care what nobody says, my brother Prince wanted me to have that song. For this film. There’s no other explanation to me.
“This cassette is in the back of the vaults. In Paisley Park. And all of a sudden, out of nowhere, it’s discovered? Nah-ah. That ain’t an accident”.
The new film follows the real story of Ron Stallworth, an African-American detective who infiltrated the Ku Klux Klan during the 1970s. Denzel Washington’s actor son John David is the movie’s star.
Lee’s film was a big hit at the Cannes Film Festival in May, picking up the Grand Prize from jury chairman Cate Blanchett and her panel, which included filmmakers Ava DuVernay and Denis Villeneuve and actresses Kristen Stewart and Lea Seydoux.
The film also impressed fans, who gave it a 10 minute standing ovation after its premiere at the festival in France.
