Scott Mills has shared a surprising secret about the male Strictly Come Dancing costumes which sounds practical enough – unless you’re suffering from pre-show nerves and need to relieve yourself swiftly.
The 44-year-old radio DJ – who took part on the show with Joanne Clifton back in 2014 – was chatting with Strictly costume designer Vicky Gill about wardrobe malfunction fears during live shows, and how the elaborate costumes for the male contestants and dancers really work.
“A lot of people won’t know this but for the smarter outfits, what I didn’t realise for the guys is that it’s like an all-in-one,” Mills revealed on the official Strictly podcast.
Gill jumped in to explain: “With shirts, we are always putting them into pants so you’re stepping into a onesie, which is always a surprise.”
“I didn’t realise that because they’re really smart trousers, and really smart shirts and you step into the trousers and then pull the shirt up like a onesie,” Mills continued. “I wasn’t expecting that.”
He then asked Gill: “Is that to avoid the shirt flapping out and looking messy?”
“Absolutely,” she replied. “The thing is for your lines and positions, you don’t want any distractions.
“You don’t want shirts coming out or feeling it in your jacket. You just want to be smooth and comfortable.”
Unless of course you’re going for the open-shirt-flapping-in-the-breeze look like Graziano Di Prima on Saturday night’s show…
Despite some pushing from Mills, Gill refused to spill any salacious details about the worst wardrobe malfunctions they’ve had on the show, and kept it discreet as she recalled: “People have been on live with pins still in their hem, and we’ve clocked it and the eyes go wide and little things like that are happening constantly.
“There will be one person a week who perhaps isn’t feeling their costume or have an issue but by the time we’re live on a Saturday night we’ve found a solution.”
Strictly Come Dancing continues this weekend on BBC One.
