Ruby Rose’s childhood dreams came true earlier this week when she was announced as the DC TV universe’s new Batwoman – and it was a monumental moment for one poignant reason.
Rose will star in an upcoming Arrowverse crossover, but there are also plans for The CW to give Ruby’s Kate Kane her own standalone series.
Something we are very on board with.
If given the Bat Signal, the series will premiere in 2019 and, more importantly, will make Batwoman one of the highest-profile LGBTQ+ characters in the DC Universe…
The Bat is out of the bag and I am beyond thrilled and honored. I’m also an emotional wreck.. because this is a childhood dream. This is something I would have died to have seen on TV when I was a young member of the LGBT community who never felt represented on tv and felt alone and different. Thank you everyone. Thank you god.

Hell, even in the whole comic book universe.
Now, Ruby Rose has spoken out about her “game-changer” casting as the ‘street fighter and out lesbian’ on The Tonight Show, admitting to Jimmy Fallon that she keeps “spontaneously crying” over the news.
“I feel like the reason I kept getting so emotional is because growing up watching TV, I never saw somebody that I identified with, let alone a superhero,” she said.
The Orange Is the New Black actress then revealed that the casting resonated with a personal motto of hers: “Be the person that you needed when you were younger.” Proud to be a representative for the LGBTQ+ community, Ruby said: “I kept crying about it.”
As outlined earlier this week in the official character description, Ruby Rose’s Kate Kane will be “armed with a passion for social justice and a flair for speaking her mind”.
“Kate Kane soars onto the streets of Gotham as Batwoman, an out lesbian and highly trained street fighter primed to snuff out the failing city’s criminal resurgence,” it continues.
“But don’t call her a hero yet. In a city desperate for a saviour, Kate must overcome her own demons before embracing the call to be Gotham’s symbol of hope.”
We think she’s a symbol of hope already, to be honest.
The multi-night Batwoman crossover is set to air across the Arrowverse in December on The CW in the US and Sky One in the UK.
