Ross Kemp reveals heartbreaking moment co-star Dame Barbara Windsor asks who he is and 'why are you here'

But would he ever return to EastEnders? He says: “Never say never. But there are loads more issues I’d love to make documentaries about too.”

He is still in touch with many of his former co-stars.

In June, he visited Barbara Windsor, who revealed earlier this year she had been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s.

Ross says: “She’s as vibrant as ever but her short-term memory has gone. One minute she knows who I am then she asks, ‘Why are you here?’ The thing about dementia is that the polite filter is gone.

“It’s a bit like being a child again because you just say it how it is. Luckily, she says she still likes me, which is a relief.

“It’s horrible to deal with but she’s still the same Babs we know and love.

“I can’t praise her and her husband Scott enough for their bravery and grace in handling her diagnosis.

“It’s a testament to their love for each other that they have managed to stick together through it.”

Friends and family are important to Ross. He and lawyer wife Renee live near Marlow, Bucks, with son Leo, three, 11-month-old twins Ava and Kitty, and Ross’s son Oliver, seven, from a previous relationship.

He admits: “It’s tough having kids this late in your life – and having twins takes a lot of energy.

“My three-year-old is trouble too. We had one really nice chandelier – it cost over £3,500 – and he smashed it. He threw two teddies up and it was absolutely everywhere. I spent hours picking up glass.”

Ross shows me a photo of Leo beaming out from under a mop of curls, and jokes: “I had hair like his when I was little. I hope he does a better job of holding on to his.”

On being a dad, he adds: “It’s fantastic and I think it makes me a better person. It makes me value how lucky I am.”

But whenever the football is on Ross is confined to a room on the other side of the house.

To know why, you just have to look at his hilarious “You beauties” World Cup Twitter outburst he posted after England’s win over Colombia, which went viral.

He says: “I’m never going to live that down, am I? I have to be locked in a room on my own when England play because I go a bit feral.

“That evening I was in this room in my house on my own and I needed to let it go.

“My country playing football just gets me. It makes me so proud to be English. I think you should be able to celebrate your country.”
