Riverdale came to an end earlier than expected as the final few episodes of season four were not filmed prior to the coronavirus pandemic. This meant the Netflix and The CW teen drama had to end on Killing Mr Honey which saw the Core Four and friends fantasize about getting rid of their strict principal Mr Honey (played by Kerr Smith) for good. But there was a lot more drama prior to this episode which got fans sitting on the edge of their seats.

WARNING: This article contains spoilers from Riverdale season 4.

The main storyline which kept fans hooked in series four of Riverdale was the “death” of Jughead Jones (Cole Sprouse).

Fans were made to believe the beanie hat wearing teen had been murdered in the woods.

Thankfully, this wasn’t the case as he faked his death after being attacked by the Stonewall Prep students to figure out their plot.

He did so and revealed all in The Locked Room episode, meaning Jughead could return to his normal life.

But little did he know that something else had been brewing while he was living in the underground bunker.

To convince everyone Jughead was actually dead, Betty Cooper (Lili Reinhart) and Archie Andrews (KJ Apa) pretended they were dating.

They were “caught” kissing in the music room and then again in the underground bunker by Stonewall’s Donna Sweett (Sarah Desjardins).

This was all just a ruse but when Betty and Archie had a row with their other halves, the pair shared a passionate kiss.

The following episode saw they were both considering being with each other as they realised there were actual feelings there.

Their romance was short-lived as Betty said she was still in love with Jughead and said they needed to go back to normal which they seemed to do in the make-shift finale.

Should Betty be with Jughead or Archie?

While Betty has been with Jughead since the first series of Riverdale, she grew up with Archie and had a crush on him for years so she has always had a soft spot for the redhead.

So is Bughead (Betty and Jughead) the right way to go or is Barchie (Betty and Archie) actually the perfect match.

Clinical psychologist and author of #AreYouHereYet: How to STFU & Show Up For Yourself Dr Tony Ortega has 27 years experience working in mental health in New York.

Dr Ortega has spoken to Express.co.uk to give his verdict on who is really right for Betty Cooper.

Dr Ortega explained: “It would be in Betty Copper’s best interest to be with her boyfriend Jughead rather than childhood friend Archie.

“We have seen throughout the seasons in Riverdale that Betty’s grasp on mental health stability has been tenuous, at best.

“There is a family history of sociopathy which has been peaking through Betty’s behaviour.

“The more grounded and level headed Jughead is a stabilising force for Betty.”

Dr Ortega continued: “Jughead is the literal backbone of the group.

“Archie, on the other hand, is still figuring his way through life.

“With the recent loss of his father, his identity as a person has been fundamentally shaken.

“Add to this his various activities and such like school, music, and the community centre.

“While Archie could provide the love Betty craves, he would not be able to give her stability, at this moment.

“While Archie is the heart of the group, he has not found his way just yet.”

Riverdale is available to watch on Netflix.
