Riverdale had to finish its fourth series early as the last few episodes weren’t finished prior to the worldwide lockdown. The drama will be returning for a fifth season but a release date has not yet been announced. The storylines from series four, however, will continue as planned at the beginning of the next season.

WARNING: This article contains spoilers from Riverdale.

Betty Cooper (played by Lili Reinhart) is at the centre of Riverdale, along with friends Archie Andrews (KJ Apa), Veronica Lodge (Camila Mendes) and boyfriend Jughead Jones (Cole Sprouse).

The four teenagers have been through more drama than most people in their lifetimes.

Betty, in particular, has experienced a lot after finding out her dad was the serial killer the Black Hood (Lochlyn Munro), and almost being murdered by the Gargoyle King, to covering up a murder and taking down creepy cult The Farm.

She has also had some typical teenage problems, including trouble with her love life.

Betty and Jughead have been together since season one of Riverdale and have remained a strong couple.

However, when Jughead was pretending to be dead, Betty and Archie acted as if they were now a couple to throw other people off the scent.

This then led to the childhood friends developing feelings for one another and they shared a passionate kiss together in Archie’s garage.

Betty decided to call things off before it got too serious but this is bound to be brought up in the next series of Riverdale.

Did this actress nearly replace Lili Reinhart as Betty Cooper?

While it is hard to imagine anyone else playing Betty aside from Reinhart, there were other actors who auditioned for the role.

One actress considered was none other than 13 Reasons Why actress Katherine Langsford who portrayed Hannah Baker.

Actress Langsford will also soon be starring in Netflix’s Cursed which will be coming out on July 17.

Cursed is a re-imagining of the Arthurian legend where Langsford plays Nimue, a woman who is destined to become the Lady of the Lake.

13 Reasons Why came out just a few months after Riverdale first aired in 2017, so Langsford would have auditioned for both of the series at a similar time.

Riverdale actress Mendes spoke to EW in 2018 about meeting Langsford during the audition process.

Mendes said: “I remember when I met [Katherine Langford], too — I never saw her act, but some people just have a personality that’s so genuine that I’m like, ‘I feel like you’re a really good actor.

“They have a presence. I had that feeling with her.”

Mendes added: “I remember we [her and Langsford] went out and we got falafel with a guy who was auditioning for Archie.”

The role of Betty wasn’t the only part up for grabs as there were several actors in line to play Jughead Jones.

These included actor Darren Barnet who is now starring as Paxton Hall-Yoshida in Never Have I Ever and Chance Perdomo who plays Ambrose Spellman on Riverdale’s spin-off series Chilling Adventures of Sabrina.

Riverdale is available to watch on Netflix.
