Richard Madeley claims he was given free croissants during hol because of Brexit

Another day, another Alan Partridge-like anecdote from Richard Madeley.

Today, the 62-year-old presenter, who is currently covering for Piers Morgan on Good Morning Britain, recalled his recent holiday in France and claimed he was given free croissants and coffee because the French felt sorry for him over Brexit .

After speaking to Lord Howard, he spoke to co-host Charlotte Hawkins and Sean Fletcher, he insisted that the French were "laughing at us" and "think we're pathetic".

"I've just come back from France over the last couple of weeks and – I'm not making this up – I was getting free coffees and croissants in the cafes that I go to a lot because they feel sorry for me because I'm British," he exclaimed.

"They're laughing at us!"

Charlotte didn't seem to quite know how to respond and said: "Aw. Do they think that you need the help?"

"They think we're pathetic! They think we're pathetic!" Richard repeatedly exclaimed. "And they don't like us very much, but they still think we're pathetic."

Charlotte shrugged at the camera and viewers were equally bemused.

One tweeted: "#GMB free croissants and coffee, behave…"

While another joked: "@GMB I for one thoroughly enjoyed Richard Madeley’s tales of his recent trip to France and only wish he’d stuck it in a postcard to me #GMB."

A third remarked: "Maybe that's just you Richard #gmb."
