Paul Chuckle opens up about brother Barry’s death in emotional This Morning interview

Just over a week after his brother Barry Chuckle’s death was announced, Paul Chuckle appeared on ITV’s This Morning today (August 13).

Speaking to Eamonn Holmes and Ruth Langsford, the comedian said that Barry kept the extent of his bone cancer private.

“He had pain in his legs for about two years,” Paul explained. “We did pantomime a couple of years ago, and I said at the time, ‘It sounds like sciatica’, because I’ve had that before and it’s very, very painful.

“And that’s what he kept telling me it was for two years… He kept it from me and he kept it from our manager Phil, he didn’t want us to know because we would have said ‘no’… but he wanted to work until he died.

“He wanted to die on stage like Tommy Cooper, he just loved working and loved making people laugh.

Talking about why he wanted to speak on TV so soon after Barry’s passing, Paul said: “It’s good to talk about him and get things out in the open. We were so close.

“Not only have we been together since we were born, but we also worked together for 55 years… we were in each other’s pockets.

“Because there has been a lot of press, different things said, and I wanted everyone to know exactly what he was like and how he went. I’m talking about him in the past… it’s still hard. He’ll live on forever. I’m sure he will.”

The family have confirmed that Barry’s public funeral will take place on Friday (August 17) at the New York Stadium in Rotherham.
