Outlander season one saw Jamie Fraser’s (played by Sam Heughan) ghost appear outside of Claire Randall’s (Caitriona Balfe) window. Although it has not yet been revealed when exactly he travels to the future – here’s why it can’t be at Culloden as one of the most popular theories suggests.
When does Jamie Fraser time travel in Outlander?
One of the biggest mysteries in Outlander so far surrounds Jamie’s ghost which appears in the first episode.
Viewers will remember he appeared outside of Claire’s window in the first season briefly watching her brushing her hair.
However, while she did not see him appear, her husband Frank Randall (Tobias Menzies) did.
But then after just a few moments, he disappeared into thin air, sending Frank into a frenzy about who he was.

Nothing has been confirmed so far about how exactly Jamie made his way to the future.
This is especially complicated as it has been confirmed he is not able to actually travel through the stones.
Series author Diana Gabaldon has confirmed how all will be revealed about this moment at the end of her final novel.
However, this has not stopped fans speculating about when exactly Jamie made his way to the future in the series.
One of the biggest theories comes from the fact Gabaldon revealed he was 25-years-old at this moment.
She revealed this in an interview with the Outlander Podcast in 2014.
She said: “Sam Heughan asked me and I hadn’t thought about it before but I just answered him immediately.
Gabaldon added: “Do you want to know? He’s about 25.”

Outlander theories: Why does Jamie’s ghost visit Claire in 1946? [THEORY]
As a result, some viewers think he might have travelled during his near-death experience at the Battle of Culloden.
For example, user vbattell88 wrote on Reddit: “Many people have been wondering about how Jamie’s ghost could travel into the future and be that spirit that looks up at Claire’s window while she brushes her hair.
“There are lots of theories and mine is that while he was lying injured and near death at the battle of Culloden, his spirit was somehow calling out to her.
“And that in itself was so powerful that it propelled his spirit forward in time just to the place where he ended up in the future and that was his way of luring her to the stones.”

- Outlander: Did Frank know Claire dies in the past with Jamie?
However, some fans have pointed out this could not have been the case as the dates do not line up for it to work.
This is because Jamie’s 25th birthday is on May 1, 1746 while Culloden took place earlier on April 16, 1746.
Therefore, Jamie would not quite be 25-years-old at the battle.
Although, given Gabaldon did only say he was “about 25” there might be some leeway in this theory.
Fans will just have to keep waiting until Gabaldon reveals all in her final book and on the television series.
Outlander seasons 1-5 are available to stream on Netflix now.
