Outlander season 5 spoilers: Roger MacKenzie doomed as death exposed in teasing clue

Outlander has followed the source material novels written by Diana Gabaldon quite closely so far. While there have been a few changes to the books’ plots here and there, most of the same narrative beats have been explored. But with the fifth book’s adaptation on its way in the form of season five, could a huge event from The Fiery Cross be changed to see the death of Roger MacKenzie (played by Richard Rankin)?

Outlander’s fifth book – The Fiery Cross – had a number of brutal and unexpected events showcased throughout its 992 pages.

One of the most shocking, however, was the instance in which Roger gets caught up with one of his distant ancestors, and kisses her.

Unfortunately for the character, her husband was not happy about this, and took him straight to the North Carolina police who wrongly charge him as a traitor.

This leads the American police force to hang the poor man, leaving him for dead.

Thankfully, the people who hanged him did not tie the noose properly meaning his life was spared.

This botched attempt at killing Roger allows Claire Fraser (Caitriona Balfe) to arrive and save him, leaving him alive, but almost unable to speak anymore.

Despite this fantastical turn of events being highly entertaining for readers, this may end up being one of the events that changes in the upcoming fifth season.

As Roger has gone up against a lot of turmoil in the recent seasons of the STARZ show, could he now be due to die?

It would be doubly tragic, in fact, as his wife Brianna Fraser (Sophie Skelton) recently gave birth to their child.

But if he is killed off, will this push Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan) into a frenzy for revenge?

Or, to switch things up even more, could the attempted murder force Claire to transport Roger back to the present day for medical attention?

If this were the case, she may not be able to return to her husband’s time period for some time, leaving him alone to deal with the fallout.

Recently fans have been theorising about the intricacies of the mystical stones that transport Claire through time.

In particular, Reddit user elf4700 suggested: “Anyway, I was wondering if [you think that] the stones are connected to each their timeline?

“Since Claire, Brianna, Roger, and Geillis all traveled to the exact same time through Craig Na Dun, then perhaps Craig Na Dun is connected to a hundred and ninety-something-years back?”

The fan went on to explain that, perhaps each site is connected to a different timeline or place.

They continued: “The pool in the West Indies is then connected to a different timeline, and the stones that Roger sees when he flees the natives Americans are then connected to another.”

“And maybe Jamie can actually travel through the stones, just not those of Craig Na Dun.

“I’d personally like to see Jamie in the 21st century, not for the sake of the story, but just because it would be funny.”

Outlander season five will premiere on Starz on February 16.
