It’s time to bid adieu to the ladies at Litchfield Penitentiary. On Wednesday, Netflix revealed that Orange Is the New Black will conclude with Season 7, although this revelation is hardly a surprise for those who managed to get through the last season. The critically and commercially lauded show is the first TV series to score Emmy nominations in both comedy and drama categories.
The streaming service dropped the news on Twitter with an emotional message from the cast including Danielle Brooks, Adrienne C. Moore, Uzo Aduba, Taylor Schilling, Laura Prepon, Natasha Lyonne, and Kate Mulgrew among many others.
Netflix previously renewed the popular series for three seasons ahead of its Season 4 premiere in 2016. OITNB followed the lives of inmates at Litchfield, although many of the original characters moved to a maximum security facility in Season 6.
“After seven seasons, it’s time to be released from prison,” stated series creator and showrunner Jenji Kohan in an official statement. “I will miss all the badass ladies of Litchfield and the incredible crew we’ve worked with. My heart is orange but fade to black.”
Season 7 of OITNB will premiere in 2019.
