It looks like the Duchess of Sussex will have a baby shower after all. Over the weekend, Meghan Markle boarded a flight to New York City for a much-needed girl’s trip and baby shower with some of her closest friends — including Jessica Mulroney, who could be Baby Sussex’s godmother. The shower, which allegedly takes place today, goes against one of the royal family’s infamous rules. Find out why — plus Meghan Markle’s baby shower details — ahead.
Meghan Markle’s baby shower and New York City trip details
In the royal family, baby showers are traditionally off-limits. “A lavish baby shower would be seen as highly inappropriate,” royal expert Victoria Arbiter confirmed to The Sun. “There’s nothing they can’t go out and buy themselves,” she added. However, the Duchess of Sussex doesn’t always follow royal protocol — and her friends certainly aren’t going to do away with their own traditions for the sake of royal family rules.
With that in mind, Meghan Markle seems to have landed on a compromise. Per royal family protocol, her New York City baby shower might be upscale, but it won’t be as lavish as a royal event could be. That way, she can still celebrate her firstborn without going overboard. However, it appears she will still head home with lots of gifts for the royal-to-be.

Jessica Mulroney made the arrangements
Many suspected that, if Meghan Markle had a baby shower, Kate Middleton was the one planning it. But, as it turns out, that’s not the case. Meghan Markle’s BFF, Jessica Mulroney allegedly put the whole thing together. She along with a dozen of Meghan Markle’s friends plan to shower the mother-to-be at an Upper East Side hotel today.
The duchess planned her trip months ago
Meghan Markle’s baby shower isn’t a last minute get together. Apparently, the duchess planned her trip to New York City and baby shower months ago. She made her way across the pond over the weekend and plans to stay in the city for five nights.
The guest list
In addition to Jessica Mulroney, 15 of Meghan Markle’s closest friends — including Abigail Spencer and Priyanka Chopra, who flew in from London Fashion Week — are also rumored to attend the event. “The trip is a lovely chance to catch up with friends and spend time in a city she loves,” a source told Harper’s Bazaar. “This will be the last time a lot of them will see Meg until after the baby is born so it’s nice to share precious moments,” they added.

One of the reasons the royal family things baby showers are tacky is due to all of the gifts. However, that won’t stop Meghan Markle’s friends from showering her and Baby Sussex with new items. “Meg will be flying home refresh and relaxed — and with a lot of new baby clothes,” the royal family source told Harper’s Bazaar.
She’s staying at a five-star hotel in the city
For safety reasons, Meghan Markle’s New York City hotel was not revealed. However, the Duchess of Sussex has reportedly enjoyed all her five-star stay has to offer, including private dining experiences and amenities.
Her itinerary
In addition to her baby shower and enjoying her hotel’s offerings, Meghan Markle also has plans to hit up some of her favorite spots in Manhattan. The Duchess of Sussex and Jessica Mulroney were spotted at Ladurée in SoHo on Saturday, February 16th for tea and macaroons in one of the bakery’s private eating areas. She also plans to get some shopping in during her visit.
