Gripping and frequently baffling drama Marcella is to return for a third series, it has finally been confirmed.
The show, which is the brainchild of The Bridge writer Hans Rosenfeldt, has been confirmed by Variety to be coming back to ITV in the UK and to Netflix worldwide in 2019.
The publication states that Rosenfeldt is hard at work writing the eight-part third run, and will focus more on the fractured psyche of the titular character.
If you watched series two then you’ll know that the finale took an absolutely out-there turn in the last 10 minutes, after the detective remembered that she had smothered her own child.
After being talked down from a roof, Marcella disfigured her own face, faked her own death and went on the run. The series ended with a mysterious figure approaching her and offering her work as an undercover ‘ghost’ operative.
Rosenfeldt previously confirmed these scenes were definitely intended as a prologue to a third series, as well as saying that the much complained about abandoning of plot threads is just part and parcel of the show’s DNA.
He said: “People get a little bit like, ‘What happened to that? What happened to this?’ but there’s really no answer.
“They were in the show for a couple of episodes and once we had no use for them, we don’t really try to wrap it up for them. That’s like real life where you don’t really know what happened to them.”
