Love Island's Megan Barton Hanson accused of "cultural appropriation" after sharing new look on Instagram

Love Island 2018’s Megan Barton Hanson is causing a stir after showing off her new hairstyle.

Sporting long cornrows whilst attending Reading & Leeds Festival over the bank holiday weekend, the reality star shared a snap of herself standing alongside her idol Post Malone on Instagram.

So here’s a picture of me fan girling so hard 🤓 If you know me well you know the love I have for @postmalone. Who would have thought a couple months ago, I would have met the love of my life @wes.nelson on a TV show. ❤️Then get to experience so many mad things together! Me and Wes hanging with post at @officialrandl 🤯 The f**k?!

“So here’s a picture of me fan girling so hard If you know me well you know the love I have for @postmalone,” Megan, who got together with boyfriend Wes Nelson on the show, said in the caption.

“Who would have thought a couple months ago, I would have met the love of my life @wes.nelson on a TV show. Then get to experience so many mad things together! Me and Wes hanging with post at @officialrandl The f**k?!”

However, not everyone was loving Megan’s snap, with claims of “cultural appropriation” circling the comments section.

One Instagram user wrote in the comments: “White girls like Megan actually have no clue what that hair represents to a lot of people then again you guys are obviously from the UK where the history isn’t quite the same as the US.

“But yes this is cultural appropriation. It’s not that serious of an issue but let’s not refrain from calling it what it is.”

Others supported the accusation, with things getting pretty heated in the comments section.

But in complete disagreement, another of Megan’s followers said: “I’m not denying that people of colour are treated unfairly… but hairstyles and music don’t belong to any culture. End of story. I understand cornrows are a way to help the texture of a POC hair but she’s not be disrespectful or discriminative…”

Another then responded in defence of the reality star: “Why is every talking about cultural hairstyle etc etc . it’s flipping hair? let her do what ever tf she wants.”
