Lorraine viewers praise 'amazing' and 'important' show segment as Dr Hilary shows viewers how to check their breasts for signs of cancer

People at home took to Twitter and thanked the medic and Lorraine Kelly for airing the candid segment, which saw "brave" model Michelle take off her dressing gown and demonstrate to viewers how to examine their boobs step-by-step.

One viewer wrote on Twitter:"Amazing feature on Lorraine on self checking your breasts. So important."

Another person said: "Excellent to see the demonstration on #Lorraine of self-examination to help detect signs of possible breast cancer. Done in a matter of fact and non-prurient way."

One fan thanked the "brave" model and said said: "Have to say how amaze @lorraine is showing women how to check your boobs for breast cancer.

"this is something all women should know from the early ages n to the woman who had her boobs out for an example, how bloody brave!!"

As another urged women to: "check ladies, check"

After the demonstration, Dr Hillary advised women to recognise any changes in their boobs by carrying out regular checks, and said: "A lot of women say, 'Well how do I know what I'm feeling? My breasts are always lumpy and grainy.'

"The thing is that is true. There are women who feel like they have a bag of sand, or rubber.

"That doesn't matter, just look for changes and if among that bag of rice you find a marble, that needs checking.

"Just go and get it checked out."

More than 50 per cent of women don't know the early signs of breast cancer, and Dr Hilary added early symptoms can be: "Skin changes, any dimpling, puckering, pulling in, any rash around the nipple area, or any sores.

"Obviously look for lumps and bums and feel for lumps and bumps. Any changes like that."

After Michelle removed her dressing gown, he said: "Put your hands on your hip and press in, this flexes the chest muscles and can reveal and changes in shape and size.

"Then move slightly to the side and look at the outer part of the breast, where most cancers are found. Then put your hands above your head and again this changes the type of muscles that you are using."

The show warned viewers that they planned to do a demonstration live on air, as Dr Hilary said: "You can talk about it until the cows come home but we need to see what we are doing when we examine our own breasts."
