Ted Hastings (Adrian Dunbar) has been facing his own personal turmoil on Line of Duty aside from his team’s investigation into the sinister balaclava group and their villainous leader, corrupt officer H.
At the end of season four, Hastings ruled Derek Hilton (Paul Higgins) was the officer masterminding the criminal operation within the force though his colleagues DI Kate Fleming (Vicky McClure) and DS Steve Arnott (Martin Compston) discovered their adversary was still active.
They discovered the detail after it was revealed undercover officer John Corbett (Stephen Graham) was deep into his role, leading the balaclava group and having communication with villain H, telling Arnott he believed his boss Hastings was the corrupt officer.
In the closing moments of last week’s episode of the BBC thriller, Corbett was seen posing as Arnott as he seemed to go rogue, and it didn’t look too good to the Superintendent’s estranged wife Roisin Hastings (Andrea Irvine).
With Corbett breaking into the flat as Roisin went to call Hastings to confirm he’d sent Arnott to speak with her, it seemed the undercover cop was going to go to drastic action to get revenge on the man he believed was H.
It’s yet to be seen what will happen to Roisin, but her estranged husband seemed to be tied up in a precarious situation with legal counsellor for the force, Gill Biggeloe (Polly Walker) as after a dinner together, the pair ended back up in the Superintendent’s hotel room.
Hastings and his wife are currently in the midst of divorce proceedings after the chief police officer put financial strain on the couple after investing in a real estate scheme which collapsed before it began.
Deflated by Roisin’s reluctance to take him back, Hastings looked set to be moving on by turning his attentions to Gill.
However, even if he manages to save his estranged wife from Corbett’s clutches if the undercover officer decides to hold Roisin hostage, could Hastings get closer to Gill as he finally accepts there’s no going back on his marriage?
The Superintendent could put himself in a dangerous situation however, as latest odds from bookmakers Betway have seen fans of the show believe Gill could be the criminal mastermind operating the ring or corrupt officers.
Gill Biggeloe has emerged as leading contender

Although a number of signs are currently pointing towards Hastings being H, the superintendent could be the officer to unmask the real culprit.
Betway’s odds are seeing Gill the hot favourite to be exposed as the criminal mastermind with her chances at being unmasked at 11/10.
However, Hastings isn’t far off the mark as he is the second most likely character to be revealed as AC-12’s criminal adversary at 6/4 on Betway’s latest odds table.
Speaking of the chances Gill will be revealed as H, Betway’s Alan Alger said: “There’s a new name on everyone’s lips as to the true identity of ‘H’ in Line Of Duty and it’s Gill Biggeloe who has emerged as the leading contender.
“We are now just 11/10 that Biggeloe is revealed as the one fans have been agonisingly trying to unearth since the show recommenced a couple of weeks ago.”
If Hastings gets closer to Gill in the coming weeks, with three more episodes set to air, could he stumble across a vital piece of evidence such as Gill’s laptop, recoiling the messages she could possibly be having with Corbett?
The spokesperson said of the other contenders in the running: “Ted Hastings has long been the leading suspect, but he’s on the drift at 6/4, while newbie John Corbett, who seems destined to become a member of the OCG permanently, is 8/1 to be confirmed as ‘H’.”
Viewers of the BBC drama will remember Gill was first introduced in season three but made a surprise reappearance this season after the death of Maneet Bindra (Maya Sondhi), and Hastings was taken-aback by her unexpected comeback.
As a legal representative working for the force to ensure their not pulled apart in court, could Gill be the perfect candidate to be villain H as she knows the workings of the law?
Last week, fans uncovered a cryptic clue which could mean there are in fact two corrupt officers masterminding the operation against AC-12 as H.
Line of Duty continues tonight at 9pm on BBC One.
