Liam Payne lost out on Steven Spielberg film role after trying to break into acting like Harry Styles

LIAM Payne has revealed that he recently lost out on a part in Steven Spielberg's remake of West Side Story.

The 25-year-old pop star was speaking about his acting lessons and how he planned to break into acting – but lost out on a lead role in the musical.

He said: "I've had some great auditions for a couple of different things, which have been amazing and I'm enjoying it. It's a fun process."

But, when Capital radio host Roman Kemp urged him to namedrop which auditions he had done, the singer reluctantly began to open up.

"Well the first thing I ever auditioned for was for the remake of Westside Story, which is being done by Steven Stielberg," Liam revealed.

He continued: "On my last birthday I got a message saying you need to go and meet 'SS' on Thursday, so I had to  go and do an audition in front of him which was quite wild."

"Did you get the part?" asked Vick Hope.

But, despite getting into the last few auditions, Liam admitted that he had lost out on the Spielberg remake at the last hurdle.

He said: "I didn't get it nah, but I was in the last like five people for it- which I was quite happy with because it was a big part in the film."

"It was the first audition I've ever done and I put four takes in and managed to get to meet Steven Spielberg, so it was pretty amazing."

Wanting to know more about the former One Direction star's encounter with with the legendary film director, Roman began asking Liam for more details about their meeting.

"Where are you? Did you go into a cold room?" he joked.

Liam quipped: "It was a bit of a cold room I'm not going to lie.

"It was all curtained off in a big warehouse type thing and he just kind of rolled in and was like "Liam!" and I was like, 'this is wild, this is the craziest thing I've ever done in my life.'"

In September, The Sun's Bizarre column reported that Liam was following in Harry Styles footsteps and was in 'advanced talks' to star in the remake of the 1961 musical.

A film source revealed: "Liam was approached and was naturally flattered to be considered.
