Lawmen: Bass Reeves – Teaser trailer on Paramount+
Lawmen: Bass Reeves director Damian Marcano has revealed his most challenging scene to film during the Yellowstone spin-off’s gruelling eight-month shoot.
In the fourth episode of the Paramount+ drama, Bass (played by David Oyelowo) and Billy Crow (Forrest Goodluck) round up a group of prisoners.
During the night, a prisoner named Ramsey (Rob Morgan) tells Bass of a mythical slaveowner named Mr Sundown who is building a plantation made from “skin and bone”.
“The scene with Ramsey and Bass, the fireside where Ramsey begins to talk about Mr Sundown in episode four,” Marcano recalled in an exclusive interview with Express.co.uk.
“That was, I mean shooting a scene between two brilliant actors in the middle of the night.”

“It really tried to force us into corners, and we just sorta kept solving it with art.
“We thought, ‘If we can’t do this today, what could we do?’”

Later, Ramsey breaks free of his shackles and one of the most violent sequences in the series so far ensues.
After trying to kill Bass in his sleep, the lawman wakes up just in time and assaults him in retaliation.
He then makes the horrific discovery that Ramsey had brutally killed another prisoner in the night, although Bass ultimately decides to spare his life.
“David and Rob were both brilliant in that scene,” Marcano said. “But the whole stunt of it, with the fight going through the fire…

“Ramsey eventually bashing Gurney’s face and Bass doing the same thing to Ramsey.
“That entire sequence, from the beginning of the campfire, was pretty challenging. Not to mention the temperature of everything.”
Marcano was also behind the camera for episode five, a preview for which hints that Mr Sundown may not be so fictional after all.
