The Sun on Sunday revealed former glamour model Katie is being treated at The Priory for post-traumatic stress disorder.
After seeing abuse aimed at Katie over her recent wild behaviour following her marriage breakdown and mum's terminal illness diagnosis, former Atomic Kitten singer Kerry told the Mirror: “Everyone’s quick to jump on the bandwagon and notice all her faults.
“All I want to say to everyone is ‘lay off her’. Why not pull each other up?
“No one is actually going ‘what’s the underlying problem of why she’s got to where she is at the minute?’.”
Kerry became close to Katie during their time on I'm a Celebrity in 2004.
The pair have both been forced to face their demons publicly as they've battled drug abuse in the past.
Katie was recently filmed drunkenly cavorting with two German men in Majorca and rapping: “I love coke.”
After being confronted by her mum Amy, the Loose Women star broke down, admitting she desperately needed help to stop her self-destructive behaviour.
Amy said: “No parent wants to see their child crumble. It’s unbearable.
“Kate has been her own worst enemy and behaved like an idiot at times but she has been tearing herself apart for years.”
Now Kerry – who is diagnosed as bipolar – feels she can relate to what Katie is going through.
Talking about when her first marriage to ex-Westlife star Brian McFadden ended, Kerry said: “I was living the dream and it all went t*ts up and everything started spiralling out of control.
“Everyone was saying ‘you’re this Kerry, you’re that, look at the state of her’. No one said: ‘Can we help you?’. ‘What’s the underlying cause?’
“Let’s take a step back and look at the reasons why people end up where they are."
Katie will start 28 days of rehab tomorrow after being diagnosed with co-morbid post-traumatic stress disorder.
Mum-of-five Katie, 40, has struggled with her split from third husband Kieran Hayler, and clashed with first husband Peter Andre over care of their two children.
The model is also facing financial ruin as her £1.6million mansion crumbles down around her.
