Katie Piper's acid attacker could be freed from jail in weeks as she dances on Strictly

Stefan Sylvestre, 30, was jailed indefinitely in 2009 after he threw sulphuric acid at the TV presenter, in an attack which left her blind in one eye aged just 24.

But parole officers have confirmed to The Daily Mirror that a hearing has taken place to decide if he can be freed.

It comes after mum-of-two Katie became the first celebrity name confirmed for this year's series of the dance show.

The author and TV presenter appeared on BBC Breakfast this morning to announce she would be taking part.

She underwent 40 operations to treat her burns following the March 2008 attack and at one point was forced to wear a plastic face mask for up to 23 hours a day.

Jealous ex-boyfriend Daniel Lynch, who organised the attack, is serving life in prison.

But Sylvestre, who carried out the horrifying attack on Lynch's orders, is now making a bid for freedom.

Speaking about going on Strictly she said: "It’s been so hard to keep a secret. I’ve known for quite a while and it’s been really hard with colleagues saying, ‘I’m getting married in October, I’d love you to be there.’

"[I’ve been like] ‘I might be, hopefully not.’ ‘What do you mean, hopefully not?!’ It’s just been so difficult."

Mum-of-two Katie, 34, also revealed this year's contestants have all been given code names of cheeses to keep their identities hidden.

She explained: "It’s so secretive and when you turn up to the reception, you can’t say what you’re here for or why.

"I couldn’t use my own name for months, I had a code name.

"My code name was Brie – everyone was cheese. It’s better than Stilton. It’s not too smelly is it."

However she is not sure how she will fair on the programme after realising she struggles to stick to a beat.

She told the hosts: "I like having fun and music and parties but dance wise,  I went to a musical on Thursday with my friend Toby and he noted that I wasn’t even clapping in time, so in terms of rhythm I don’t know how that’s going to go."

Steps star Faye Tozer, radio DJ Vick Hope, cricketer Graeme Swann and Blue's Lee Ryan are among other stars expected to take part in this year's series.

The Sun exclusively revealed that Graeme, 39, will follow in a long line of former cricketers to compete in the BBC1 series.

And Capital FM host Vick is going to be starting the season newly-single after ending her four-year relationship with actor Tom Rosenthal.
