James Corden is poking fun at President Donald Trump's reaction to his COVID-19 diagnosis with the parody song, "Maybe I'm Immune."
On Tuesday night, Corden opened The Late Late Show by sitting at a grand piano and performing his version of Paul McCartney's "Maybe I'm Amazed,” changing the lyrics to match Trump's comments following his recent novel coronavirus hospitalization.
The sketch opened with Trump's video message from Monday in which he returned to the White House, took off his mask, and said, "I learned so much about coronavirus. I know there's a risk, there's a danger, but now I'm better … and maybe I'm immune, I don't know."
The camera then cut to Corden, 42, whose song parodied the president's refusal to wear a mask, his controversial comment and his current poll standings.
"Maybe I'm immune 'cause today I'm feeling so alive/ Just don't be afraid of the way I'm breathing," Corden sang.
"Maybe I'm immune, it's OK to go out for a ride/ With others trapped inside/ Maybe you're immune to the lies my doctors tell you," he continued, referencing Trump waving at his supporters outside of Walter Reed Medical Center over the weekend.
Throughout the song, clips of the 74-year-old president played behind Corden, including the moment Trump took off his mask at the White House and his early suggestion that American's should inject bleach to kill the virus.
"Maybe I'm a man and maybe I don't wear a mask 'cause I don't care about others/ Science I don't really understand," Corden crooned. "Maybe I'm a man, and maybe I'm just high from this experimental cocktail/ Maybe I just need some oxygen."
The late-night host then brought up Trump's current poll standings in the election against Joe Biden.
"Maybe I'm immune to the way the polls are looking now/Maybe I'm afraid that it's not fake news/Maybe I'm immune to all the lies that I have made, I shouldn't have downplayed/Maybe I'm afraid that I might lose this," he sang.
Corden concluded the tune by softly singing, "Maybe on November 3 I just might lose this."
Both Trump and his wife, Melania, announced that they tested positive for COVID-19 last Thursday.
The president said on Twitter earlier Monday that he would be leaving the hospital after his three-day stay, adding in the tweet that he was "feeling really good" after being treated by Walter Reed doctors.
"Though he may not be entirely out of the woods yet, the team and I agree that all our evaluations — and most importantly, his clinical status — support the president’s safe return home,” the White House physician, Dr. Sean Conley, told reporters at a briefing outside the hospital earlier on Monday.
Conley said that, in the medical team's view, there was no longer any part of the president's treatment that he could not receive back at the White House.
Trump’s doctors and the White House gave a conflicting account of his health over the weekend, and his medical team admitted they were projecting optimism about his condition.
There are some questions they have still not answered, such as when he last tested negative last week — while attending various events — and if the virus has left him with any lung damage or pneumonia.
