Veep is leaving office. HBO’s critically acclaimed political satire will end with Season 7, with the first of seven episodes premiering Sunday, March 31. Julia Louis-Dreyfus, who plays President Selina Meyer, says that saying goodbye to the show — which has been on the air since 2012 — was difficult.
Louis-Dreyfus says she cried on the last day of filming
“I wept like a baby,” the actress told People when discussing filming the show’s last episode at the Season 7 premiere event in New York “The whole deal. I was hysterical.”
“What I’m gonna miss most is being with all these wonderful people, whom I adore more than I can possibly articulate,” she added. Louis-Dreyfus’s co-stars include Anna Chlumsky as Amy Brookheimer, Meyer’s chief of staff, and Tony Hale as her loyal aide Gary Walsh.
Louis-Dreyfus has won six Emmys for her work on the show playing“a hyper-dysfunctional, narcissistic, undeveloped, ruthless human being,” as she described to People.
She might not always be likable, but according to the comedian, Selina Meyer is the role of a lifetime. “This is unsurpassed for me in many ways,” she told CBS News.
“[A]t our final table read we had I was actually surprised by how frankly hysterical I became,” she added. “And maybe that’s because, I don’t know, I’m more cognizant of what a treasure this is just ’cause I’m older, and I’ve been doing this a while and I’m sort of aware of, when it’s good, it’s a very lucky thing, yeah.”
What’s next for the actress?
Filming on the last season of her HBO show was delayed as Louis-Dreyfus received treatment for breast cancer. Today, she’s cancer-free and looking forward to moving on to her post-Veep projects. Currently, she’s producing and starring in Downhill, a remake of the Swedish movie Force Majeure that will co-star Will Ferrell. She’ll also voice a character in the upcoming Disney movie Onward.
But despite her many successes, the 58-year-old Louis-Dreyfus says it can be challenging to be taken seriously as a woman in Hollywood, especially an older woman.
“There are plenty of things in trying to stay alive in show business that are very similar to trying to stay alive politically,” she told Time. “And being a woman, a middle-aged woman, trying to stay relevant and viable — I get it. Not being taken seriously. It’s infuriating.”
What to expect from the last season of Veep
As for what to expect from the last season of Veep, Louis-Dreyfus dropped some hints at the premiere.
“Selina Meyer is going to try to make a run for the presidency, yet again,” she told the Huffington Post. “She’s been veep. She’s been the president. She wants to be the president again. But it’s extreme this season. We definitely push the edge of the envelope, and it’s going to get pretty raucous.”
